Empirical Esthetics: 18 Outstanding Images That Celebrate the Beauty Revealed by Science [Slide Show]

Czech "Science Is Beautiful" photo and illustration competition explores the wondrous worlds discovered via scientific investigation

Life is filled with unexpected moments of beauty, something those on a lab bench know just as well as any poet. The third annual Science Is Beautiful competition at Charles University in Prague allowed students and faculty to share these moments through photographs, digital imagery and illustration.

"What is beautiful about science?" asked Bohuslav Ga?, dean of the university's Faculty of Science, which organized the competition, during his introductory speech at the exhibition of winning entries. "Two things: the enchantment in the discovery of the unknown and the delight in the elegance of ideas and shapes. The last one we can fully perceive in the present exhibition."

The contest, which debuted in 2009, aims to share science's esthetic with the general public, raising awareness of the marvels scientists encounter daily. The winning entries cross disciplines, setting mathematical models and crustacean anatomy side by side. Each image blurs the distinction between art and science, from a da Vinci?esque painting of a fetus in utero, to a photograph of magnified mineral surface with a palette that would have pleased Kandinsky.

The competition received 281 entries, and jurists included a number of prominent Czech scientists and artists, including a singer?songwriter-cum-dragonfly-photographer as well as the founder of the Digital Imaging Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. In addition, the general public could comment on and rate entries online to elect a people's choice winner, which was announced alongside the jury's selections.

Winners could place in one of four categories: scientific microphotography, scientific photography, scientific illustration or virtual nature. In addition, the jury chose a grand prize?winner who received 12,000 Czech crowns.

The jury announced winners of the 2011 competition on December 14, 2011. This past May, the Czech edition of Scientific American shared a selection of winners and other outstanding entries. You can see more images from 2011 and previous years at the competition's Web site (in Czech).

An Honest Review of Video Marketing Goldmine | welcome to oadt.us

Web business owners considering video marketing are likely to be interested in the latest product by Sean Donahue, Video Marketing Goldmine, which focuses on making the move from general Internet marketing to video marketing. This course promises to teach marketers the secret of video marketing in order to get real world results from online marketing efforts. The following review will explore just how well this course delivers on that promise and if it?s really worth the investment. We know you want to have greater Page One Curator, and what business on the net would not? First, remember you will need to research and plan well in advance to avoid costly mistakes. One of the most basic prerequisites for successful conversions is based on knowledge of those to whom you are selling. Understanding your market is perhaps one of the most important responsibilities you have toward your business. The processes that are most important for any business are advertising and marketing, and this is the tool that provides the means to add power to those two elements. You need to be understood by your niche market, and that means you are the one who has to learn how to speak with them. It is very clear that you have to give people a chance to embrace your messages but only after you make a connection.

What Does it Do? There are tons of courses that you can buy right now that will show you how to expand your business using tons of Internet marketing techniques. However, very few courses come out like the ?Video Marketing Goldmine?, which use one single channel to show you the true way of achieving online success. This course will reveal exactly how you should create marketing videos and how your business can prosper if you use them as outlined. Don?t mistake Video Marketing Goldmine to be a hanky-panky Internet marketing course that fails to deliver, because it contains vast amounts of targeted knowledge, ready to be put to use by anyone that?s looking out to achieve success. You will find out how video marketing can be used to get the most success from your business. The reason why people can?t wait to see this program is because Sean Donahoe, the creator of the program, knows exactly how video marketing is supposed to go and all of his other programs have succeeded.

Who is Sean Donahoe? Sean Donahoe is a prominent figure in the online marketing world and he has worn many hats including that of an author, a coach, a consultant, and many more. This just goes on to show that he has worked real hard to get where he is today, and this can be seen in the quality of his products. His instructions are laid out in such a way that they?re easy to follow as you take immediate action. Always think in terms of conversion rates as you learn anything new, and as usual we encourage you to learn much more than what is presented in this article. You should have that perspective all the time no matter how good or bad you feel about it. Obviously we have no clue how you feel concerning http://seofight-back.com/, or if you would ever even think about trying it. Not necessarily at all with what we are talking about today, but there are other methods and ideas that are sold and not really the best choices for people to use.

We have all been scammed early in our IM careers, and it can almost seem like a rite of passage for us. There really are a lot of people, we assume based on what we have read, who just blindly buy things they think will work great and maybe never even try them. That experience is very common with web marketers who are relatively new and with little experience. What we are writing about in this article is well known and without question, but you still really have to discover more in order to get the most out of it. This all goes along with the thought of an ounce of prevention, and it is an ounce well spent, possibly.

Sean started off first in the Warrior Forum and became a respected marketer by sharing his knowledge, which lead him to launch his own successful membership site called the ?Sean Donahoe?s Inner Circle?, which helped many newbies get started. Along the way he has learned a lot about video marketing, and that?s what he puts into ?Video Assassin?, his previous program. Video Marketing Goldmine goes above and beyond his previous teachings to help online business owners get the maximum benefit from video marketing techniques. We hope you found this discussion helpful for your business needs.

Just about every business on the net can have more streams of income even if they come from an expansion of marketing methods.

Remember that the web is a highly dynamic environment, and lots of people have lost their main source of income overnight due to forces beyond their control. All we can ever do is alert people to dangers and best practices that are designed to actually help protect them. It is tempting to fall into the whole thing about an autopilot income and business using The Social Commissions or some other approach, but beware because that can be dangerous. Look at SEO, search engine optimization, and with that you can never truly stop working on it because if you do then other will be gaining on you. In Closing: You should now see just how effective Video Marketing Goldmine can be for taking your business above and beyond. Let?s face it; the next gen web content is going to be about videos and more videos; so it just makes sense to invest in this timely course and earn long term profits.

You Won?t Find Friends Nearby Anymore: Facebook Pulls Its Location-Aware Mobile App To Add New Friends

FFN errorSo much for that! Just as quietly and quickly as Facebook had put "Find Friends Nearby" online on Sunday, the mobile service to instantly add new Facebook friends in your vicinity is no longer there. A visit to the mobile web page is blank, and a click on the "Find Friends Nearby" tab in the iOS app goes to an error page. When we first broke the news about Facebook's new feature yesterday, the prospect raised all sorts of questions about what Facebook might do in this space. The app lets users find other Facebook users near them, and then quickly add them to their network: the service looked very rudimentary, but the concept offers potential ideas for how Facebook could develop such a service going forward.

Getting Some Great Tips About Commercial Real Estate | South ...

In the beginning phases of your career as an investor, limit yourself to working with a single type of investment. Carefully consider the type of property investment you are interested in and focus your attention on it alone. It is best at first to learn on one strategy than start out with many where you might not fare as well.

Have your property inspected before you list it for sale. Have any issue that the inspector finds repaired right away.

Before you enter into any negotiations for a lease on commercial real estate, attempt to decrease anything that may be thought of as a default event. This decreases the chances that the tenant will default on the lease. Once a default happens, you?ll be in big trouble!

Ask any potential broker about what experience they have had with commercial property before choosing someone to represent your interests. Verify they have experience in working with the type of properties you are interested in. When you find the right broker, make sure your agreement is exclusive.

You should think about what neighborhood you are going to buy the commercial real estate in. If you purchase it in a more affluent neighborhood chances are your business will be more successful, because the pockets of your potential clientele are a bit deeper. If the business you run caters to a lower-income demographic, buy in an area that fits your clientele best.

If you want to sell a property, advertise it locally and on a wider level too. Don?t be mistaken by the thought that locals will be the only people interested in your sale. There are many investors who are interested in financing properties which are outside their area as long as they are a great deal.

Make sure you?ll be able to access power, water and other utilities for your commercial property. Your business has utility needs of its own, but you will also need water, electric, sewer and maybe even gas.

Regardless of whether you are buying or selling, you should negotiate. Ensure that your voice is heard, and that you are offering-or receiving-a price that is fair for both parties.

Be sure to deal with a company where customer care is important prior to buying. Working with the wrong agency could cause you to commit mistakes and lose money.

Before you start out on your search for the perfect commercial property, you should be fully attuned to the specifics of your business needs. Know what type of office space that you need to have. If you plan to make your company grow, it will be a good idea to buy more space than you need while the market is low to save you some money later.

There are substantial differences between residential and commercial loans, one being that commercial loans require a larger down payment relative to the property?s value. Searching for a reliable lender and a good investment can lead you to find the commercial loan you need.

Establish an online presence prior to entering the market. Creating a LinkedIn profile is one good way to accomplish this; another approach would be to develop your own professional website. Look into search engine optimization so that your website will rank higher in internet searches. Your goal is to have people instantly find information about you when they type your name in to a search engine.

Go on a tour of all potential properties. Bring a contractor along so that you don?t forget to inspect any important features. Make the preliminary proposals, and open the negotiating table. Evaluate counteroffers against the information you collected on your tours, and use that information to justify your own counteroffers.

If you are trying to choose between two good commercial properties, think big. Obtaining adequate financing is a major undertaking, whether you opt for a ten-unit apartment complex or a twenty-unit apartment complex. Just think about it as the more you buy the lower you are paying per unit, so you save more in the end.

Don?t choose a real estate broker until you learn about his or her preferred negotiation techniques. Ask what kind of training and experience they have. Also make sure they?re ethical when doing business and can get you the best deals. Ask them to show you examples of past negotiations, both successful and unsuccessful.

Get clear and precise square footage numbers for any space. Commercial property can be effectively measured by how much square footage is actually usable by a business, whereas the physical total includes walls and uninhabitable or inaccessible areas. The best strategy is to ask for both figures, to ask for the square footage and the usable square footage.

Don?t ignore the environment that a property you?re considering is in. You are responsible for cleaning up your building from environmental waste. Is your property located in an area known for floods? Take the time go think things over before taking action. As part of your decision to purchase a commercial real estate property, you should make inquiries at environmental assessment agencies in order to find out if there are any risks you should be aware of about the property and its surrounding area.

Try practicing patience and remain calm, if you are considering purchasing any commercial real estate. You should never rush into a possible investment. You might regret it if that property is not right for you. Realistically, it can take upwards of a year to find the right investment in your local market.

Don?t ever assume you?ve finished learning about the commercial real estate market. Work under the assumption that there is more to learn, so that you will always be seeking out new information and new ways to profit from your investments. Use what you learned wisely, and make a big profit later.

Kris Humphries to Myla Sinanaj: Where Was Kanye?!?

While the Kim Kardashian/Kanye West relationship may have come out of nowhere to most of the tabloid-reading public, Kris Humphries was reportedly convinced something was up between these two as far back as last summer.

How come? Because Kanye, despite being described as a "close family friend" by Kris Jenner last year, was NOT invited to Kris and Kim's ratings-based August wedding.

According to TMZ sources, Humphries openly wondered why this was the case, expressing suspicion to Myla Sinanaj during their time as a couple earlier this year.

Sinanaj has suddenly become an important player in the ongoing divorce battle between Kris and Kim, with the latter's attorney's summoning her to a deposition in order to spill details on her relationship with Humphries.

The latest report claims Kris told his former gal pal that he "felt played" by Kardashian and that Myla and Kris were actually together when the latter first heard Kanye admit to loving Kim via rap song.

Humphries was allegedly "visibly upset" when he heard the track.

That's how we feel every time we read a story about these terrible people.

Poll: Election winner won't impact economy much

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When it comes to the economy, half of Americans in a new poll say it won't matter much whether Barack Obama or Mitt Romney wins ? even though the presidential candidates have staked their chances on which would be better at fixing the economic mess.

People are especially pessimistic about the future president's influence over jobs, according to the Associated Press-GfK poll. Asked how much impact the November winner will have on unemployment, 6 in 10 gave answers ranging from slim to none.

Yet the candidates, the polls and the pundits agree ? the economy is the issue of 2012. Can either man convince voters that he would set things right?

James Gray of Snow Hill, N.C., is skeptical.

"It doesn't look to me like the economy or nothing gets better no matter who you've got up there," Gray said. "I don't know why it is."

A retired policeman, Gray plans to vote for Romney and thinks the Republican might win. But he doesn't have much hope that would improve things for people like him, living on a fixed income. "Every time you go to the grocery store the prices have gone up," he said.

Years of disappointing economic news following the 2007-2009 recession have deflated American optimism. And worries about financial troubles in Europe and congressional gridlock at home hang over the future. Two-thirds of people still describe the economy as poor. The same number ? 31 percent ? think unemployment will grow worse over the next year as predict it will ease up.

"Right now it's so bad," said Maria Fisher of Timber Pines, Fla. "I wish everything was better."

Fisher, a preschool teacher at the YMCA, favors Romney because he's a Republican and a successful businessman. She's ready "to give him the chance to fix all these problems." But she doubts there's much the president can do.

Lots of Obama supporters feel the same way.

"The office of the president as a single person doesn't have as much influence as we generally attribute to them," said Jeff Guertin, a mechanical engineer in Bedford, N.H., who backs Obama.

Guertin said a president is limited by Congress' willingness to go along with his ideas, as well as all sorts of other factors, including world events, that affect whether the U.S. economy grows or shrinks.

Despite the dominance of economic issues in the presidential race, Americans are evenly split over whether the man living in the White House in 2013 will bring significant change to the overall economy.

A majority of those surveyed ? 55 percent ? say the winner will have from "just some impact" to "no impact" on the nation's huge budget deficits.

Those with little confidence that the winner can fix things are also more pessimistic overall ? just 32 percent of them think the economy will improve in the coming year. In contrast, among those who expect a substantial impact from the winner, almost half think the economy will get better.

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to predict that the winner's imprint will be felt: 58 percent say the election's outcome will affect the economy overall. Yet fewer than half of Republicans foresee much impact on joblessness.

Everett Hickman, an Obama supporter, said both campaigns overplay how much a president can do.

"The federal government has some influence over the economy," said Hickman, a retired radio news reporter living in Charlotte, N.C. "It doesn't have the kind of push-pull, click-clack control that some people seem to think, or pretend to think."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.

Hactivists Claim Responsibility for Twitter Outage, but Twitter Says No

Microblogging social network Twitter suffered a debilitating denial-of-service attack June 21, beginning at 9:09 a.m. PST and rendering the site inaccessible for intermittent periods for several hours.

The site came back up at around 10:06 a.m. PST and then went down for various spans of time after that. An administrator posted the following message and kept it up on its status.twitter.com site: "Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue."

eWEEK received a message from Twitter spokesman Robert Weeks at 1:30 p.m. PT, stating: "@TwitterComms: Today's outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We'll provide updated information soon."

Hacktivists, However, Take Credit

During the outages, eWEEK was contacted via email by a person using the alias "Cosmo lol," who claimed to be a member of the UGNazi hacktivist group.

"Cosmo lol" took credit for taking down Twitter and, when asked why, emailed: "Just to show what we really are capable of."

When asked for proof of the deed, "Cosmo lol" emailed: "I can follow you on @CosmoTheGod and @UG for proof." There were lively discussions on those two Twitter threads immediately after the site came back into action.

After Twitter emailed eWEEK about the "cascaded bug" problem, "Cosmo lol" emailed eWEEK with this response: "They moved to multiple servers in the past couple hours trying to migrate our attack, there (sic) is no bug in there (sic) system.'"

This was supposed to be a big day for Twitter. The company announced that it plans to expand its "promoted tweets" ad platform to 50 countries by the end of the year.

"I'm extremely humbled by how quick and broadly Twitter has taken off and how we've done building something independent and timeless. This is a company that will last," The Hollywood Reporter quoted Twitter founder Jack Dorsey at a press conference in Cannes, France.?

Friends: The Complete Series Blu-ray set arrives November 13th for just under three bills

Friends The Complete Series Bluray set arrives November 13th for just under three bills

The good news is that after many rumors, Warner Home Video has finally confirmed it's bringing the TV show Friends to Blu-ray this fall. The (potentially) bad news is that it's going to be an all or nothing affair, with all 236 episodes (90 hours) shoved into a 21-disc BD-50 set with the 17 hours of bonus features from the DVD releases, plus three hours of new special features. While the remastered HD episodes (in case you weren't aware, Friends, like Seinfeld, was recorded on film and has already been reformatted for HD and widescreen while airing in syndication) will feature DTS 5.1 audio, there's also a 32-page episode guide shoved into the case, which features lenticular shifting artwork that can be seen over on TV Shows On DVD. There's no price on Amazon yet but the MSRP will be $279.98 when it ships November 13th -- decide carefully how much having The Rembrandts "I'll Be There For You" video in 1080p is worth.

Syria activists using US tech to beat curbs

U.S. technologies that may include a mobile phone "panic button" and an "internet suitcase" are being used by activists in Syria and other authoritarian countries to override government communications controls, a U.S. official said on Thursday.

Alec Ross, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's senior adviser for innovation, said the United States was working on between 10 and 20 classified technologies that could be used by protesters and others facing communications curbs.

He also described how Facebook and other social networks could be used to challenge propaganda spread online by what he called the "Syrian Electronic Army".

"They're (some of the new technologies) being used in Syria. A number of the organizations that have benefited from our training include Syrian citizens," Ross told reporters in London, declining to specify which of the technologies were being used.

Ross outlined one U.S. innovation that he said was inspired by the detention of protesters in Iran and the mining of their phones for information on activist networks.

The so-called "panic button" is a pin code that when entered into a mobile phone will immediately wipe its address book and messages.

Another is the "internet suitcase", which he said could be used to set up a communications network even when the state-controlled telecommunications provider has shut off connectivity or is using it to monitor and punish dissent.

Ross said there was "clear evidence" that Syria's main mobile phone operator Syriatel, which is currently under U.S. sanctions, was being used to identify and punish dissent.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in Syria since an uprising began against President Bashar al-Assad last year, inspired by a wave demonstrations across the Middle East that toppled autocratic leaders in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen.

Syrian Electronic Army
Social networks played a key role in rallying activists during the Arab Spring, and authorities responded by shutting down networks to make it harder for protesters to coordinate.

In Syria, Ross gave an example of how Facebook could be used to undermine state propaganda, and described how the U.S. envoy to Damascus had taken to posting messages on the social networking site to avoid being misinterpreted.

The ambassador's posts were then flooded by anti-U.S. and pro-Assad responses, Ross said, implying that they were a coordinated onslaught.

"What happened is real Syrian citizens began to out members of the Syrian Electronic Army, and so while the army might have put 500 comments, normal Syrians put another 500 up saying 'Ignore all these comments that are pro-Bashar'," Ross said.

"At the end of the day the Syrian Electronic Army came out with egg on its face," he added.

Ross said Washington communicated with Google and Facebook to share information on their operations in "oppressive environments", giving an example of talks prompted by cyber attacks by the government of ousted Tunisian leader Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali to stifle protests against his rule.

"We have open communications and discussions with companies like Google and Facebook in oppressive environments so we can share information," Ross said.

"The Ben Ali government cyber-attacked 1.4 million of its own citizens to try to identify the 'movement leaders' and Facebook actually told us about the cyber attack. We then shared information over the weeks that followed over the respective responses."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, closing his final foreign trip before the November election, sought to head home with fresh commitments Tuesday that Europe was racing toward a plan to keep its economic union afloat and its allies from being sucked into recession.

Leaders of the world's other established and emerging powers wanted something from Obama, too ? an assurance that the U.S. economy won't plunge into an abyss at year's end, when tax hikes and big spending cuts are due to kick in unless lawmakers and the White House cut a deal.

All sides at the Group of 20 summit seemed intent on sending confident signals to jittery markets and unhappy electorates. The European mess of high debt, high borrowing rates and high unemployment poses huge spillover risks to the American economy and Obama's political future.

Obama sent word through a spokesman that he was "encouraged" about Europe's path after the president met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Merkel proclaimed that the European Union nations were determined to solve the crisis through debt cutting, growth and cooperation.

"That reached very attentive ears here," Merkel said from the summit, held in this resort region along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Obama was immersed in a second day of talks before meeting separately with Chinese President Hu Jintao and holding a news conference. He was to be back in Washington early Wednesday, where a fierce re-election campaign and a slumping U.S. jobs market await him.

Despite the words of unity, European leaders showed signs that they have heard enough about their troubles, particularly from Americans. Memories linger of the 2008 financial crash that was borne in the United States and destroyed jobs and wealth.

"The eurozone has a serious problem, but it is certainly not the only imbalance in the world economy," Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti said Tuesday. He said the United States' own financial problems were mentioned in G-20 talks "by almost everybody, including President Obama."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso took an aggressive tone with reporters on Monday, also pointing some blame at North America and saying "Frankly we are not coming here to receive lessons in terms of democracy."

Europe's ability to turn around its fortunes fast will have direct bearing on whether Obama wins a second term. The bigger the drag from abroad, the harder the job growth in the United States.

Obama said all countries must contribute so "the economy grows, the situation stabilizes, confidence returns to the markets."

Although the foreign gatherings allow Obama to show off statesmanship, every day spent away from the United States and a direct focus on jobs in America quietly gives headaches to his campaign aides.

While Obama was in Mexico, his Republican competitor, Mitt Romney, was wrapping up a campaign bus tour through the heart of America.

Obama was spending much of Tuesday on the economic crisis after taking care of some unrelated diplomatic business ? his first meeting with Vladimir Putin since the former Russian president returned to the job this year. The leaders met for two hours Monday, in talks dominated by a bloody Syrian conflict that has deeply divided Russia and the U.S.

Central to the G-20 debate is how nations can boost jobs and consumer demand without sinking deeper into debt. Obama has implored governments to spend and grow, not just cut.

A draft of the leaders' final statement shows they want assurances that the United States won't take a deep plunge and drag them down as well.

The statement says the U.S. will "calibrate" its attempt to rein in debt and spending "by avoiding a sharp fiscal contraction in 2013."

That's a reference to a big threat to economic growth in the United States after the November election: the expiration of George W. Bush-era tax cuts and a scheduled round of automatic spending cuts that could send the nation back into a recession.

While the White House and lawmakers agree that they must act late this year or early next year to avoid such a "fiscal cliff," there is no path yet on how to avoid it.

Obama's political move has been to constantly show confidence in Europe's ability to solve its problems, but prod its leaders to move and chide them for not doing more sooner. Now, White House aides talk more positively about the direction of the debate, as they see it, toward the role of government in spurring economic growth.

"I think if you look at the shift in the focus, you'll see a very strong focus on supporting demand ... recognizing that economic conditions have deteriorated," said Lael Brainard, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for international affairs.

"This is very important to the Europeans in particular," she said. "And yes, we have heard it from German colleagues."

Q: We're now in the June-July trading period. Is there any chance of a team or teams making the kind of trade that can dramatically transform their post-season chances?
? Roy Long, Serra Mesa, Calif.

A: It happens quite often, Roy, so expect it again. Remember back just one season ago, when the St. Louis Cardinals added Rafael Furcal, Edwin Jackson, Marc Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel in two deals before the July 31 trade deadline, and went onto win the World Series; as well as the big impact Doug Fister had on the Detroit Tigers' stretch run.

One team that immediately comes to mind in this trading period is the Los Angeles Dodgers. The combination of new ownership wanting to send a message, and a handful of needs on a somewhat unexpected contender sets up a high probability of action. It's not a stretch to say that Don Mattingly's roster could use a starting pitcher, a reliever, a first baseman (at least a platoon mate for chronic disappointment James Loney), a third baseman and a left fielder.

If the Dodgers want to aim real high ? and don't mind waiting ? potential free-agents Zack Greinke and Cole Hamels could become available after the All-Star break if their respective teams can't jump back into the postseason chase. Either could be a rent-a-player, but it stands to reason that a newly capitalized Dodgers franchise would have a good chance to sign either long-term.

The Brewers have been playing better lately, but stripped their farm system to acquire Greinke, Shawn Marcum and others to make their run last season, and lost Prince Fielder for nothing more than draft picks, so they could face a direction-changing decision in the next six weeks.

And the Phillies might just be the most-fascinating team to watch just after the All-Star break, as they teeter between sticking in the NL wild-card chase with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley on their way back into the lineup, and the increasing possibility that their six-year run of playoff appearances may be coming to an end. Shane Victorino is another potential free agent who could be dealt if the Phillies hit seller mode in late-July.

With more immediacy in mind, here is a list of seller teams, and likely-available targeted players:

Chicago Cubs: Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster (currently on the DL), Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto, David DeJesus. (But I'm not buying the Starlin Castro speculation; it makes little sense to me).

Houston Astros: Wandy Rodriguez, Brett Myers, Carlos Lee, Jed Lowrie, Chris Snyder.

San Diego Padres: Carlos Quentin, Huston Street, Chase Headley, Edinson Volquez, Nick Hundley.

Colorado Rockies: Rafael Betancourt, Michael Cuddyer, Marco Scutaro, Matt Belisle, Jeremy Guthrie.

Oakland A's: Grant Balfour, Kurt Suzuki, Bartolo Colon, Seth Smith, Brian Fuentes, Coco Crisp, Jonny Gomes.

Minnesota Twins: Francisco Liriano, Josh Willingham, Ryan Doumit, Matt Capps, Glen Perkins, Carl Pavano.

Seattle Mariners: Kevin Millwood, Jason Vargas, Brandon League.

Boston's Kevin Youkilis also is available, and the Royals are another team that could shed veterans such as Jeff Francoeur and Jonathan Broxton. But it should be said that the Royals have climbed out of a 3-14 hole by playing above-.500 baseball since mid-April, and are on the fringes of AL Central contention.

The Rangers could use a right-handed-hitting outfielder, and have a deep system as well as a surplus of big-league pitching, especially when Roy Oswalt is activated and Neftali Feliz comes off the disabled list.

The Tigers need a second baseman, a starting pitcher and relief help more than a third baseman who would push Miguel Cabrera into a DH role.

And virtually every contending team needs something, so I expect a busy trading period.

Q: Is there a legit first baseman out there the Giants can acquire prior to the trade deadline, or should they stick with what they have?
? Robert Pyper, Phoenix

A: Boston's Kevin Youkilis is one. Houston's Carlos Lee is another. And if the Twins decide to really pare salary, Justin Morneau could be available, but they haven't indicated that is the case yet.

But before the Giants go that route, my first thought is why not stick with Brandon Belt for awhile and see where that goes?

Belt's full-season numbers aren't all that impressive, but he has begun to hit with recent regular playing time.

In June, he is 13 for 38 (.342) with three homers, 10 RBI and nine walks ? offering hope that he's about to establish himself as a productive big-league first baseman.

I'm sure the Giants will give him every opportunity to succeed, but that said, they are serious postseason contenders, so if Belt falters between now and July 31, you can bet Brian Sabean and Co. will pinpoint a first baseman who can take over, or at least share, the load.

The problem with a Youkilis or Lee deal is finding the right combination of prospect surrendered/salary absorbed. That's why seeing one of your own top prospects such as Belt succeed is almost always the preferable option.

Youkilis is 33, and should have something left in the tank, but his 2012 salary is $12 million, and his numbers are far below his career norm, dragged down further by a recent slump.

Lee has an enormous $18.5-million salary ? but nothing beyond this season ? and the Astros know they will have to pay most of it to move him.

Morneau's salary is at $14 million for both 2012 and 2013, the final year of a six-year, $80-million deal he signed in 2008.

Q: What umpire calls the most consistent strike zone?
? David Blum, Bel Air, Md.

A: Veteran Tim McClelland long has been acknowledged by players and coaching personnel to be at or very near the top of the game's umpires. And a recent Baseball Prospectus examination of umpire data available on the Brooks Baseball.net site put numbers behind that opinion.

Since the PITCHf/x system has been used by MLB to evaluate umpires' balls-and-strikes calls, McClelland ranked first with 89.1 percent correct calls. Now, if only McClelland ? who's in his 31st big-league season ? would make the calls a bit quicker, as he delays raising his right arm to indicate a strike for an annoyingly long time.

It also must be said that the percentages were so close ? with the next 10 umpires between 87.8 and 88.9 percent correct calls ? so it's almost splitting hairs considering the thousands of pitches called by each umpire over the years.

Jim Joyce ?despite the infamous blown call that cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game ? is another very highly regarded umpire.
