Wall Street set to open higher, Apple rallies on court ruling

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures pointed to gains at the open on Monday as investors awaited signs of central bank stimulus and as Apple surged following a court victory.

News the European Central Bank was considering setting yield-band targets in a new bond-buying program that could help contain euro zone borrowing costs lifted positive sentiment on Friday, but many questions remain about the timing and size of any possible action.

Investors are looking ahead to a meeting of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday for clarity on what the U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank will do to support an economy showing signs of slowing growth.

Equities have rallied on growing expectations for a third round of quantitative easing from the Fed, and the news from Jackson Hole could determine whether the recent rally that took the S&P index to four-year highs will persist.

"Upcoming market movement will all come on QE3 and how likely it seems that we'll get it," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners LLC in New York. "The market has been expecting it, and we could react negatively if we don't."

Daily trading volume is expected to be extremely light ahead of the meeting, and as many market participants are out on vacation ahead of the Labor Day holiday on September 3. Last week, volume was among the lowest of the year.

Apple Inc gained 2.7 percent to $680.89 in premarket trading after the company won a sweeping victory in a patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics . Samsung said it would contest the verdict, which orders it to pay $1.05 billion in damages.

U.S.-listed shares of Nokia Corp , a Samsung competitor, surged 12 percent to $3.45 in premarket trading.

"This should give Apple that much more power and strength in the market, which should obviously be a positive for the stock," said Pavlik. Shares of Apple have already gained about 64 percent so far this year.

Energy shares will be in focus on Monday, with crude oil advancing 0.8 percent on concerns a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico could suspend U.S. production.

S&P 500 futures rose 5 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 27 points and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 20 points.

In merger news, car rental firm Hertz Global Holdings said it would buy smaller rival Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group for about $2.3 billion while M&T Bank Corp is buying Hudson City Bancorp Inc for $3.7 billion.

Shares of Hertz climbed 15 percent to $15.10 in premarket while Dollar Thrifty gained 7.4 percent to $86.96. M&T shares edged slightly lower.

Tiffany & Co climbed 6.8 percent to $62.50 before the bell after reporting its second-quarter results, though it also cut its full-year profit and sales outlook.

European shares <.fteu3> edged slightly higher, though trading volume was extremely light with the UK market shut for a bank holiday.

Over the weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel tried to play down comments from the Bundesbank, which compared the ECB's bond-buying program to a dangerous drug, as well as comments from an ally who said Greece should leave the euro zone.

Wall Street rose on Friday on news of the European bond-buying program, though a six-week string of gains in the S&P and Dow ended amid shifting expectations for central bank stimulus.

Real Estate Buying: How To Make The Process A Good One | Rapid ...

Real estate agents can help you find a good property and give you a complete list of things that must be done. These people helped kill the real estate market, after all. If you are thinking about buying a property, read these tips to learn more about real estate.

Keep an open mind about what you want. You probably won?t be able to get everything on your want list, but narrowing it down to a few things you absolutely have to have can give you a lot of what you want. If you cannot afford a home in the neighborhood of your choosing, take time to check if there any homes within your budget available. You may be surprised by what you nearly passed up!

A house that needs a lot of improving and updates will be a little cheaper. This permits you to save your money on the purchase price, and you have time to work on your home at your own pace. You can not only design your home in a manner that appeals to you, but you will also build equity with your improvements. Make sure that you are looking at the potential a house has, instead of focusing on the negatives. It?s quite possible that behind that ugly, outdated paneling, your dream home is hiding.

Before settling on a property to purchase, exercise patience, and be realistic with regard to the various choices available. It might be months or more before you find a property that suits your needs.

It is important to be familiar with the kinds of houses located in the area you are planning to move to. You should not automatically go after the largest and most expensive home in the neighborhood. Though that might be tempting, it?s not usually possible to retain the value on a home that is priced higher than those in the surrounding area, especially when the other houses nearby have much lower size, improvements and value.

When you are interviewing real estate agents, make sure you have a list of questions already planned out. Ask about things that really matter to you. For example, you might ask if they have sold a lot of homes in your area of interest, and find out the number of homes they have sold during the past year. A good agent will have this information readily available.

As you read in the intro, don?t rely on the advice of these ?experts.? If they were such hot shots, why was there a real estate bubble burst to start with? Ignore the faux-gurus. Stay away from the people who think they know everything and instead, use these up-to-date tips on purchasing property.

Buying a home is a major investment as a first time home buyer you need all the help you can get. Make the process fun and easy, get the information you need here with the ?FREE Home Buyers Guide To Success?

Vestas in talks with Mitsubishi

(AP) ? Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's biggest maker of wind turbines, says it is in talk with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries over possible "strategic cooperation."

The Denmark-based group didn't disclose details Tuesday but said an announcement will be made if the two companies reach agreement.

Vestas shares jumped more than 13 percent after the announcement, to 38.61 kroner ($6.49) in early Copenhagen trading.

Vestas said last week it will slash 1,400 jobs to reduce costs amid stiff competition and a market slowdown. Those come in addition to 2,335 worldwide layoffs announced worldwide in January. It currently has 20,400 employees.

Vestas reported a second-quarter net loss of ?8 million, down from a profit of ?55 million in the same period last year.

To cap or not to cap: Scientists find new RNA phenomenon that challenges dogma

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Some RNA molecules spend time in a restful state akin to hibernation rather than automatically carrying out their established job of delivering protein-building instructions in cells, new research suggests.

And instead of being a fluke or a mistake, the research suggests that this restful period appears to be a programmed step for RNA produced by certain types of genes, including some that control cell division and decide where proteins will work in a cell to sustain the cell's life.

This could mean that protein production in cells is not as clear-cut as biology textbooks suggest, scientists say.

"This could mean there are more variations to the proteins in our bodies than we realize; it means that RNAs can be stored and reactivated and we don't know what biological process that affects -- it could influence embryonic development, or neurological activity, or even cancer," said Daniel Schoenberg, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

Schoenberg and colleagues discovered this phenomenon by tracing the origins of a cap-like structure on messenger RNA (mRNA) that is known to coordinate most of this RNA molecule's short life. Messenger RNA is manufactured in a cell's nucleus and each mRNA contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein that a cell needs to live.

Until now, scientists have believed that once an mRNA is no longer needed to make protein, the cap comes off and the molecule is degraded, its job complete. But Schoenberg's lab discovered in 2009 that some mRNAs that were thought to be degraded were instead still present in the cell, but they were missing part of their sequence and had caps placed back on the newly formed ends. Because these mRNAs were in the cytoplasm, the changes had to happen there rather than inside the nucleus.

In this new study, the researchers were looking for further evidence of these apparent rogue mRNAs, but instead they found that a completely unexpected biological process occurs before some proteins are even a glimmer in a gene's eye: The uncapping and recapping of mRNAs outside the nucleus results from a cap recycling operation in the cell cytoplasm. This process appeared to enable certain RNAs to pause, without being degraded, before launching protein production.

"What this discovery tells us is a complete fundamental reworking of the relationship between a gene, messenger RNA and a protein. It's more complicated than we realize," Schoenberg said.

The research is published online in the open-access journal Cell Reports.

That fragments of mRNA could exist at all in the cell's main body was first reported by other scientists in 1992. Years later, Schoenberg asked a postdoctoral researcher in his lab to revisit these unexpected RNA fragments and confirm they exist. The postdoc's experiments showed that these mRNA, thought to be the dregs left over from their degradation, had caps on them -- suggesting they still had the potential to function in protein production. Schoenberg, also director of Ohio State's Center for RNA Biology, has been investigating this cytoplasmic capping operation ever since.

In 2009, he and colleagues reported the discovery of two enzymes in the cell's main body that would enable mRNA capping to occur completely outside the nucleus and in the cytoplasm instead.

In the current studies, Schoenberg sought to determine the physiological significance of this capping operation. The researchers engineered a way to block cytoplasmic capping in cells in the lab and then looked at changes in more than 55,000 RNAs.

This interference with cytoplasmic capping revealed that two different types of pathways could exist in the cells -- some mRNAs remained stable without their caps, while others without caps were rapidly destroyed. This finding indicated that mRNAs can lose their caps in the cytoplasm and at some point get recapped. With further experimentation, the researchers determined that only some mRNAs lost their caps in the cell body.

"It's not all of any particular message that's uncapped, just a portion of a message," Schoenberg said. "We wanted to show that we have uncapped RNAs in the cell and they are not degraded. It means they're stored that way."

This finding offered hints that there is a higher order to this phenomenon, and that some mRNAs purposefully rest in an uncapped state without being degraded by enzymes within the cell whose job is to remove them. It also suggested that as the capping circumstances change inside the cell body, signals from genes might undergo change that allows for two or more proteins, one being shorter than the other, to be made from the same mRNA.

"We have always thought that one gene would give an mRNA for one kind of protein. But what we have found makes us wonder if multiple proteins could be made from each of the messenger RNAs that undergo decapping and recapping in the cytoplasm," Schoenberg said.

The researchers used bioinformatics technology to determine which genes were manufacturing mRNAs that could exist in this uncapped and recapped state in the cytoplasm. These genes included those that control some of the most basic elements of cell survival: They determine the location of proteins and RNAs within the cell and, perhaps most significantly, the mitotic cell cycle -- part of the process of cell division.

"It wasn't random. It was very specific," Schoenberg said. "There are specific families of mRNAs that are regulated in this way, and that has ramifications for how proteins are expressed and regulated."

As an example, he cited how neurons communicate messages across vast distances to other nerve cells. It is known that mRNAs are deliberately kept in a silent state while they travel from, for example, the spinal cord to the fingertip, where they are then activated to make new proteins.

"What would the condition be of the mRNA to keep it silent? The possibility is it doesn't have a cap on it, and if it doesn't, it can't be translated. Maybe cytoplasmic capping in neurons is a function that allows that message to be translated at just the right time," Schoenberg said.

Or, in the case of cancer: "What if one of the things that happens is you are making shortened proteins instead of full-length proteins and the regulatory part of the protein is missing in the shortened protein? If that's true, can you interfere with this process and interfere with malignancy as a result?"

For now, these scientists can only speculate about what this unexpected biological process really means. Schoenberg's lab plans to investigate the phenomenon more thoroughly in a line of breast cancer cells.

Obama campaign: 'America doesn't need a birther-in-chief'

The Obama campaign is branding Mitt Romney an aspiring "birther-in-chief," after the presumptive GOP nominee seemed to joke Friday about the long-debunked claim that President Obama was not born in the United States.

In a 15-second web video produced nine hours after Romney made the remark on a campaign stop in Michigan, Team Obama accused Romney of "embracing unfounded conspiracy theories, distracting from real issues."

"Holding out hope Romney had a vision for the middle class? Think again," the narrator said.

The spot included a clip of Romney speaking in Commerce, Mich., when he said:

"Now, I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital. I was born in Harper Hospital. No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," he said drawing laughter and applause. "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Romney later clarified in an interview with CBS News that the comment was "not a swipe" at the president and that he believes Obama was born in the U.S.A.

But that didn't stop the president's re-election campaign from seizing on the subtle reference, nonetheless.

"America doesn't need a birther-in-chief," the Obama Web spot concluded.

California poised to grant driver?s licenses to young illegal immigrants

California is on the verge of allowing hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants to receive driver?s licenses for the first time in nearly two decades.

The key question is how to do it.

The issue of granting driver?s licenses to undocumented immigrants has raged in the Legislature for much of the past decade, without resolution, but fighting is largely moot now due to a new federal policy.

Panama edges Mexico 2-1 to move on at LLWS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. ?

Edisson Gonzalez pitched a gem to get Panama one step closer to a Little League title.

The 12-year-old Gonzalez had 11 strikeouts and James Gonzalez provided the offense with a two-run homer in the first to lift the team from Aguadulce past Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 2-1 on Thursday.

Panama will face Japan in a rematch in the international title game Saturday. Tokyo beat Panama 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Mexico starter Ramon Ballina struck out 12, but allowed James Gonzalez's big blast.

Panama manager Luis Gonzalez is a also proud uncle after 12-year-old nephew hit the homer.

"It was a difficult game, but our pitcher did his job," Luis Gonzalez said through a translator. "One pitch decided the game."

Mexico scored in the fifth on Marcelo Perez's RBI single, and had the tying run at second with two outs in the sixth.

But Edisson Gonzalez got a strikeout to end the game.

"I was not nervous in the beginning of the game," he said, "but in the last inning when the first batter got on, I got nervous. (James') home run helped because I'm not having a good tournament at the plate and we needed it to win the game."

After the teams exchanged handshakes at the plate, Edisson Gonzalez made it a point to join several teammates to exchange high-fives one more time with Mexico's disappointed players. He tapped counterpart Ballina, 13, on the shoulder, as the Mexico starter walked back to his dugout to offer kind words and an embrace.

Texas and California played later Thursday for a spot against Tennessee in the U.S. final.

Either team can only hope to get a pitching performance like the one Edisson Gonzalez had against Mexico.

Looking as cool and confident as a big-league ace, Gonzalez consistently worked ahead of the count and didn't allow a runner to get past first until Eduardo Abrego doubled to left in the fifth.

"Yes we can! Yes we can," Mexico's vocal fans yelled in Spanish in trying to urge a comeback.

Perez followed with his solid RBI single to center, but Gonzalez got two strikeouts to end that inning.

Juan Rodriguez had a leadoff single in the sixth and moved to second with two outs on a passed ball. Gonzalez answered again with his final strikeout to complete his five-hitter.

Renowned earlier in the tournament for their power, Mexico hitters struggled at the plate until the final innings. The loss eliminated Mexico.

After beating Curacao on Tuesday, Mexico lost its second game without manager Fernando Rios, who was suspended two games after failing to have all his players take a turn at bat in a 4-3 win earlier this week over Taiwan.

Mexico's manager elected not to speak with reporters after the game.

India's opposition to block parliament until PM resigns

India's opposition vowed on Wednesday to block parliamentary proceedings until the prime minister resigned over a coal scandal, raising the prospect of more legislative deadlock and stalled reforms.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was implicated by the national auditor in a report published last Friday which suggested the government had lost out on billions of dollars of revenue by gifting away coal mining rights.

Singh, who has seen his reputation as "Mr Clean" damaged by a string of scandals in his second term in government, served as acting coal minister from 2004-2009.

Senior opposition leader Arun Jaitley said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would obstruct parliamentary proceedings until the 79-year-old Singh took personal responsibility and stepped down.

"Parliamentary obstructionism is normally to be avoided, but in rare cases parties do adopt it," Jaitley told the Times Now television channel in an interview as both houses of parliament were adjourned for the second day in row.

"The way forward is that the prime minister must accept his culpability. The reason is very obvious. For five out of the eight years (analysed by the auditor)... he himself was the coal minister," Jaitley added.

The disruption in parliament comes as India's economy is badly faltering, with investors and business leaders looking for decisive action from the under-fire government to restore confidence and spur expansion.

Quarterly economic growth slumped to its lowest level in nine years in the first three months of the year and more bad GDP data are expected at the end of this month.

In 2010, the BJP and opposition allies blocked an entire session of parliament, forcing adjournments for 22 business days in a row which meant no legislation was passed.

"BJP goes for broke, wants PM to quit," headlined The Times of India on its front page on Wednesday, underlining how the opposition had staked its credibility on removing Singh.

President of the ruling Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, is expected to stand steadfastly by her choice as premier, who has weathered repeated calls from the opposition to resign previously.

The report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said private companies had made windfall gains of about $33.4 billion since 2004 after being given mining rights via a process that "lacked transparency and objectivity".

The government had known of the huge profits for private operators, but had failed to introduce an open bidding process that would have brought in revenue for the national exchequer, the CAG said.

The report did not contain any allegations of corruption or criminal practices and the government accused the CAG, an independent constitutional body, of publishing spurious figures.

"I think as and when this case is investigated more glaring facts will come out," Jaitley claimed.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters the government was ready for a discussion about the CAG report in parliament and accused the BJP of running away from an open debate.

"Why are they even opposing a discussion? They are scared about the fact that when this discussion takes place, skeletons will come out," he said.

The government has said its efforts to introduce open bidding for coal resources were held up by opposition from some state governments, notably ones run by the BJP.

The "coalgate" scandal centres on the opaque system of gifting away valuable coal resources to companies, with little known about why politicians and bureaucrats favoured some operators over others.

In 2010, Singh's government was hit by a huge scandal over the murky sale of mobile phone spectrum, which led to the arrest of a minister accused of taking kickbacks in return for favours.

Q&A on Expanded NCAA Women's Tourney Bracket

August 23, 2012

by Corey McLaughlin | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter

Thirteen conference champions will now receive automatic qualifying berths to the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament, starting in 2013.
? Gani Pinero

Last week's news that the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament field will expand from 16 to 26 teams for the 2013 season means one thing for sure: more teams will have a chance to win a national title.

But how will an expanded bracket look? Will selection criteria change, or do costs associated with travel become more of an issue with a greater number of teams competing? NCAA Division I women's lacrosse committee chair Candice Lee met with members of the media Wednesday to discuss those questions and more.

Lee, also an associate athletic director at Vanderbilt, is the outgoing chair whose one-year term ends at the end of August. She addressed a variety of topics, including deflecting any credit for the decision and saying expansion was talked about for at least four years.

As an aside, the 2013 final four site has not yet been announced, but an announcement is expected by mid-September.

What considerations are being made for travel to minimize costs and how will those considerations affect the way the tournament is seeded?

CL: There is guiding principle that we use currently and I think it would probably be the same with the new bracket. We try to build in the least number of [plane] flights possible. That's really a directive from the NCAA. Although the field is expanding I would image that we would continue to do that. We try to stay true to a seed, when we're seeding teams, so I think it would continue. But geography does come into play when you begin talking about limiting the number of flights.

There is not a hard and fast number [of flights] but once we look at the bracket and we seed and we stay as true as possible to the seeds then we have to look at flight considerations. We're going to our best to manage it, stay true to the bracket but have the least number of flights. It's a challenge in building the best bracket but that's the principle that we're committed to following, and that we have to follow. There's not that much you can do once it's established who the 26 teams are. Then you just have to manage it the best you can with your principles and trying to keep the number of flights down.

Will at-large selection criteria change at all?

No. The committee reserves the right to adjust selection criteria as they see fit for the following year, but we haven't made any dramatic changes to selection criteria so that process would be the same. We'll be looking at everyone's performance throughout the year and use the same criteria that we did before.

Was there any consideration for regionalizing the tournament with regional pods?

Yes. We looked at various different ways on how to structure the bracket. The one that we confirmed was the one that caused us the least amount of problems, and did not disrupt the student-athlete experience. That's the primary thing, creating a nice championship experience for these kids, basically trying to keep the same format we had now if at all possible with limiting impact on travel and final exams and that kind of thing. We did talk about regionalizing it, but thought that the bracket we came up with was best.

The top eight teams will still be seeded, correct?

Yes, we will seed the top eight teams, but only the top six will get a bye and seeds seven and eight will play in the first round, but they will be hosting. All of the top eight seeds will host.

Will this expansion have any effect on television exposure?

I don't know I can answer that with certainty. I would hope it continues to show how really exciting the sport is. The fact that the bracket has expanded and that more schools are choosing to sponsor women's lacrosse, that shows there is great support for the sport. Like anything else, TV will pick up what's popular and what people want to see. We hope that people will want to continue to see women's lacrosse.

Why 26 teams and not 24 or 32?

Twenty four was really the number that the committee started with. That was the magic number initially, but then when we did a review of all the conferences that would be eligible to be automatic qualifiers, that was 13. Because we have to hold to the principle where we have to reserve 50 percent of the bracket for at-large, 26 is the magic number because you have 13 conferences that will be automatic qualifiers. Going into this year, we still had play-in games. Twenty-six is great because it eliminates the play-in games. You just have outright conference champions that will have access to post-season. For the committee, that was a priority and 26 makes sense when you look at the principles.

If there is another conference added in the future, would you go back to a play-in format if needed?

Play-in games are used to meet the NCAA criteria, the AQ guidelines. Ideally you want to not have play-in games, but I hope that this is a problem committee's in the future will have to content with regularly because it means that the game is growing.

With eight days left as chair of the committee, how does this fit in to what you've done as committee chair?

I appreciate the question, but the changes you see is the work of an entire committee, but the work of several committees. These things don't get changed in a year. This is my fourth year on the committee and first as chair and I can tell you that coming on the committee in my first year this was part of the conversation. I would be remiss if I took credit. My time came up to be the chair. But if you're going to put the responsibility on the chair then you have to recognize last year's chair, Teddy Burns, and Ryan Bamford, who was the chair before that, as well as all the men and women who participated. This is truly a group effort. I would certainly give recognition to [NCAA associate director of championships] D'Ann Keller because she really took it upon herself to understand the sport. It was new to her just like it was new to me. We started at the same time. This is her doing. This is all the conference commissioners who were interested in growing the sport. This is administrators and coaches who had voices and made themselves heard. This is student-athletes who play women's lacrosse who are showing that it's exciting and we need to continue expanding.

UN chief plans to attend summit in Iran, drawing both support and fire

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will attend next week?s summit of the Nonaligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran, drawing criticism from the United States and Israel and dealing a setback to their effort to isolate Iran.

It is not unusual for a UN secretary-general to attend a meeting of the NAM, which is made up of 120 largely developing nations. But this year's host, Iran, has a controversial nuclear program and is accused of aiding the Assad regime in Syria and threatening the existence of Israel, prompting many Western leaders, politicians, and NGOs to express disapproval of Mr. Ban's decision to attend.

RECOMMENDED: Iran's nuclear program: 4 things you may not know

"The fact that the meeting is happening in a country that's in violation of so many of its international obligations and posing a threat to neighbors ... sends a very strange signal with regard to support for the international order, rule of law, etc.," US State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said last week.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke out against Ban?s attendance, saying: "To grant legitimacy, however unintentional, to a regime that openly calls for the elimination of another UN member state will stain you and the organization you lead."

But many see Iran?s contentious statements and international isolation as the very reason Ban should attend the conference, focusing on a diplomatic opportunity. Ban has raised the volume on his criticism of Iran's leadership in the leadup to the summit, just last week describing the verbal attack of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Israel as ?offensive and inflammatory,? according to the Associated Press.

Mr. Ahmadinejad stated that there was no place for the Jewish state in the Middle East, and in the past has questioned whether the Holocaust of World War II actually happened. Additionally, last week, Mr. Khamenei said Israel would one day be returned to the Palestinian nation and cease to exist.

Nonetheless, a diplomatic source anonymously told Reuters news service that the nonaligned movement is ?a very important bloc of nations ? [Ban] can?t not go.?

A Security Council diplomat said it was important for the secretary-general to go. He said Ban should not turn his back on the entire non-aligned movement because one member, Iran, happens to have a president who doubts the Holocaust and questions Israel's right to exist.

A UN spokesman said the NAM represents two-thirds of UN member states, reports a second Reuters story.

According to Ali Reza Miryousefi, the press officer of the mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN, the Nonaligned Movement in Tehran will help the group of nations ?realize the movement?s objectives,? reports the Tehran Times. In response to a Washington Post editorial published on Aug. 15, Mr. Miryousefi wrote an Op-Ed headlined ?The Importance of the Tehran Summit,? criticizing the Post's stand:

The Post?s Aug. 15 editorial ?Fool?s errand? unjustifiably smeared Iran and mocked the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran as a ?bacchanal of nonsense.? This ignored the growing importance of the movement, made up of the majority of UN member states, in international affairs.

In light of its focus on multilateral cooperation, disarmament, sustainable world peace, rights of nations and horizontal relations defying hegemonic structures, the Non-Aligned Movement is a major cross-regional group in the United Nations, and U.N. leaders have always participated in its summits. By bringing dozens of world leaders together, the summit promises to make significant contributions to the movement?s lofty objectives.

Diplomats don?t expect Ban to raise the topic of Iran?s nuclear program ? which Iran says is a peaceful initiative and the West claims is working toward the nuclear weapons ? during the summit, according to Reuters. Many believe he is likely to broach these topics, however, during his probable private meeting with the Iranian president, and UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters that, "With respect to the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Secretary-General will use the opportunity to convey the clear concerns and expectations of the international community."

Ban is "fully aware of the sensitivities" linked to his visit, but he is also aware of his responsibilities as head of the United Nations, Mr. Nesirky said.

According to Foreign Policy, the US response to Ban?s attendance of the NAM summit, which will take place from Aug. 26-31, ?reflects the heightened sensitivity to engaging Iran? during an election year.

?Why the Washington furor? This is an election year in which Iran is perhaps the only foreign-policy issue that has political traction with any constituency in the United States," said Jeffrey Laurenti, an expert on the United Nations at the Century Foundation. "This is what a secretary-general is supposed to do ? explore any diplomatic opening. The fact that Washington is in a period when all diplomatic openings are slammed shut does not mean that the rest of the world would automatically follow suit."

The NAM?s mission is to improve and enhance national development of member nations by ?strengthening and expanding South-South Technical Cooperation? in international development, according to the Nonaligned Movement website. Members include Egypt, Cuba, Ethiopia, Bolivia, the Maldives, and Iran, and according to Press TV, 31 heads of state are expected to attend the 16th NAM summit, where the rotating chairmanship will be transferred from Egypt to Iran.

MasterCard denies BitCoin card rumors, BitInstant says it's still on track

MasterCard shoots down BitCoin debit card rumors

Well, BitInstant is insistent that it will launch a BitCoin debit card, but MasterCard is claiming it will not be part of the plans. After a mock up of the plastic made the rounds featuring the company's logo, the financial powerhouse felt it necessary to reach out to us, clarifying its non-involvement.

"MasterCard has no relationship with BitInstant. There are issuers who allow the conversion of Bitcoins to US dollars and other currencies, delivered on prepaid cards. However, we're not aware of this particular programme from BitInstant."

Of course, if you read the transcript of Charlie Shrem's chat announcing the plans, he never actually names MasterCard. The logo was likely meant as a placeholder -- one that some outlets took a little too literally.

Interestingly, this doesn't actually mean that MasterCard won't be involved... just that the company isn't at this point in the process. BitInstant released its own statement, just hours after the card house contacted us, saying that it has been working with MasterCard affiliates, but had yet to submit to the financial firm directly.

"The card program is moving forward and the arrangement with MasterCard will be handled in due time at the proper stage of the process by the partners who work directly with that company."

So, what have we learned today? Not a whole heck of a lot actually, other than the fact that putting out a debit card is a complicated business. You'll just have to stay tuned to see how this shakes out.

Learn Real Estate Investing In Commercial Properties : simsadler.net

Fact is, the potential for commercial real estate profits usually surpass that of residential properties. It can be a little harder to find the good opportunities, though. This article provides a lot of useful information that will make you more knowledgeable of the factors involved in commercial real estate. Learning this information, and following the advice provided, will enable you to make smart and profitable commercial real estate decisions.

Practice calm and patience when you are looking into the real estate market. Do not rush into investments, or make decisions impulsively. You may soon regret it when the property does not fulfill your goals. You should be prepared to wait an entire year before a worthy investment becomes available to you.

Commercial loans differ from the residential loans. For instance, they have a higher percentage down payment. Try to locate the best lenders; then try asking for any quality investments. Both of these are a great way for you to increase your changes of qualifying for a commercial loan.

Don?t depend on just one financier when purchasing commercial property. Ask friends or family members you can trust to help you finance property in addition to applying for bank loans. The more sources of financing you have, the more likely you are to obtain the cash you need to finance your purchases. Be sure your contracts are flexible with a clause that allows payments with fixed interest and/or payments consisting of a set percentage of the property?s income.

An honest broker should be willing to answer questions about how they earn their money. Honest brokers will be open about this, so you can tell if your interests will be at odds. You should determine how exactly they derive profits from your business transactions.

You need to figure out exactly what type of space your business needs before you start looking for commercial property to lease or buy. Make sure you have an idea of the type of office space that you want to work in. While the real estate market is in the right place, it would be a great idea to purchase extra space for keeping up with your growing company.

By now you should have a better understanding of how commercial real estate works. The world of commercial real estate is always in flux, so it is important that you keep up on the latest information and be prepared to change your methods as the market changes. By doing so, you will be in a position to recognize the good opportunities that others might miss, and make a deal that maximizes your profitability.

Jets' play not quite offensive to coach Rex Ryan

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? Rex Ryan didn?t get to pose with the Snoopy Trophy the way he did last year

On this night, his Jets more resembled the cartoon dog?s owner, perennial loser Charlie Brown, or better yet, walking cloud of dust Pig-Pen.

They certainly have a lot of things to clean up before the regular season begins.

The Jets were blanked in the first half Saturday en route to a 26-3 loss to the Giants at MetLife Stadium in the so-called Snoopy Bowl, named for the corporate mascot of the stadium sponsor. Considering that Ryan never plays his starters at all in Week Four of the preseason, the starting offense will have its final chance at scoring in August when the Jets (0-2) host Carolina next Sunday.

The Jets were hoping for a better performance from their starting offense after two fruitless series against Cincinnati last week. But this unit was even worse against the Giants, going scoreless in six possessions.

Still, Ryan stated he is not worried.

?I?m 100 percent sure when we kick it off for real,? he said, ?we will have more production.?

It would be hard not to. The starting offense totaled 83 yards and was 0-for-6 on third downs.

?It?s not time to push the panic button right now,? quarterback Mark Sanchez said after being sacked three times by the Giants? starters. Backup Tim Tebow was sacked four times by the reserves.

Granted, Sanchez wasn?t helped by the fact that wide receivers Santonio Holmes (rib, back), Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (ankle) all were sidelined.

Still, the offensive line was the biggest problem, with right tackle Wayne Hunter the worst culprit. He allowed two of the three sacks on Sanchez and had some culpability on the other one, on which Sanchez held the ball a long time because of good coverage by the Giants.

?We need to improve technique-wise? on pass protection, Ryan said.

As for Hunter, who was seeing his first game action this August after missing the opener at Cincinnati because of a back injury, Ryan said, ?I have a tough time believing it was (only) one guy? that was responsible.

?There are a lot of things I can work on,? Hunter said. ?There are a lot of things I need to work on.?

Because of the Giants? ferocious pass rush, Sanchez rarely had time to look downfield. Thus, his passing numbers looked like this: 9-for-11, 59 paltry yards. Oh, and there was one very costly interception.

Sony quietly outs Xperia SL, gifts it with a dualcore 17GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU, four hues

That oft-rumored successor to the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the Xperia SL? Sony's now officially listing the 4.3-inch GSM device as "coming soon" on its website, along with full details and specs. As it turns out, the initial leaks were correct -- the SL is a slight refresh of the S, differentiating itself with an additional duo of color choices (silver and pink), a faster dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S3 CPU and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (up from a 1.5Ghz processor and Gingerbread). Aside from all that, it's the same media-focused phone, loaded with the same 720p display and 12.1-megapixel shooter, that we reviewed in March of 2011. We can't say we're overly excited, but you'll find more info from Sony at the source link below if you're interested.

[Thanks, Olmar]

'Tumour' of Israel will soon be destroyed: Ahmadinejad

Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity,'' Iran's president said Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said confronting Israel is an effort to ?protect the dignity of all human beings.''

?The existence of the Zionist regime is an insult to all humanity,'' Ahmadinejad said. He was addressing worshipers at Tehran University after nationwide pro-Palestinian rallies, an annual event marking Quds (Jerusalem) Day on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, support for radical anti-Israel groups on its borders and repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly made such calls, as has Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has denied allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at producing electricity and radioisotopes used to treat cancer patients.

Israel has been carrying on an increasingly public debate about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's official position is to favor diplomatic and economic measures to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, but Israel insists that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Israeli leaders say ?all options are on the table,'' a clear reference to a military strike, if they determine that other measures have failed.

Iran has warned it would hit back at Israel if it is attacked, also threatening to strike at American interests in the region.

... contd.

Dana Cawthon: 3 Rules Every Medical Marijuana Dispensary Must ...

August 17, 2012 Dana 4-bmp(1)

In our uncertain and volatile marketplace, it is more important than ever for medical marijuana dispensary owners to comply with local rules, standards and regulations established for the industry.

With a proliferation of MMJ businesses in recent years and marijuana legalization on the ballot in several states, authorities are looking for any reason to shut dispensaries down. Moreover, recent banking restrictions have made it significantly more difficult for dispensaries to be successful from a financial perspective.

The best way to overcome these obstacles and reinvent new, more favorable market conditions is to maintain strict business guidelines. While this may seem obvious, it is crucial for each medical marijuana entrepreneur to make sure he consistently reexamines his business practices and adheres to the following three rules:

#1. Managerial Accounting ? As an owner, it is imperative for you or your management team to routinely (daily or weekly) go over the company?s financial statements and target discrepancies. This adds to your bottom line by keeping you on pace for the short and long term financial goals established in your business plan. It also helps to manage inventory as well as to establish buying trends and pricing practices. Adopting effective accounting practices is the best tool to use to eliminate employee consumption and theft?the largest area of business risk in the MMJ industry. Another positive byproduct of implementing a strict accounting routine is that you will be much more ready should the government ever decide to audit your company.

#2. ?Hands On? Leadership/Human Resources Development -? It is vital that dispensary owners have a thorough knowledge of the rules, standards and regulations of the industry in order to convey them to their employees. Non-compliance exposes you to being shut down. Interactive leadership engages your team to be more responsible, to take pride in the importance of their duties and to build morale. An employee will be more valuable through this commitment and accountability and become much more likely to stay longer, thereby reducing turnover.

#3. Business Ethics -? Establishing and implementing proper business ethics will help to change the perceived culture of the MMJ industry and enable us to become better corporate citizens. Our industry promotes and sells a product that is subject to added public scrutiny due to its inherent ?gray areas.? Therefore, dispensary owners need to be proactive and set a high standard for policing ourselves in order to gain acceptance. Each owner should implore his team to not ?use? on the job, to insist on seeing proper ID?s, look and act professional at all times, know the rules, and engage with customers and the public at large in a positive manner. Adhering to strong business ethics will help establish an owner not only as a leader in the MMJ industry, but even more importantly as an asset to the general business community as well.

While the medical marijuana industry is in its infancy, we need to step up our game and earn the right to be viewed as a legitimate trade. The best way to ensure our success and safety is to practice what we preach. We need to recapture the trust of the banking community and the overall business community in general by becoming better and more responsible business people ourselves. In the end, it is the best public relations we have to ensure that medical marijuana becomes legalized and that we all benefit.

Dana Cawthon is chief executive officer and co-founder of Corporate Results, a full-service consulting firm specializing in the needs of dispensary owners, MMJ manufacturers and supporting doctors.
