Katie Couric: Kate Middleton Too Thin, "Needs to Eat More"

Discussing her new show Katie and which celebrities she'd like to interview, Katie Couric made some surprisingly candid remarks about one in particular.

"I think it would be interesting to interview Kate Middleton because she has comported herself so well since she has been thrust in the limelight," she said.

However, she added, "I think she needs to eat more because she’s so thin.”

Gorgeous Kate MiddletonSkinny Kate Middleton

Royal sources consistently reiterate that there is no problem with Kate's dietary habits, yet speculation and discussion about Kate's slender frame persist.

Some even think it may be at least part of the reason that the newlyweds have yet to become pregnant, despite their expressed desire to start a family.

It is not clear why Couric - who was granted exclusive access to the Royals for her ABC News Special - would have made the extraordinary comments.

She surely meant no harm, but the weight topic is a sensitive one to say the least at the palace, especially given Princess Diana's battle with bulimia.

Kate Middleton is not bulimic, obviously, and even seems to have put on (a little) weight in the past few weeks, though she remains naturally thin.

The palace has not yet responded to Couric's comments. What do you think? Is she out of line? Leave a comment and vote in the survey below:

Weather forces Obama convention speech indoors

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama scrapped plans to hold the biggest speech of his re-election campaign in a 74,000-seat outdoor football stadium on Thursday night, moving it to a much smaller venue due to severe weather forecasts.

The address to the Democratic National Convention will now be held in the approximately 20,000-seat Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina, convention officials said on Wednesday.

The change is a blow to Obama and Democrats, who had hoped to create a visual spectacle in Charlotte's Bank of America stadium to rival his 2008 acceptance speech in a football stadium in Denver, Colorado.

Tickets to the speech had been distributed to tens of thousands of Obama supporters from around the country who planned to converge on Charlotte to hear him accept the party's nomination for the November 6 election.

Obama will speak to those supporters on a conference call on Thursday afternoon, organizers said.

"We have been monitoring weather forecasts closely and several reports predict thunderstorms in the area," convention chief Steve Kerrigan said in a statement.

"Therefore we have decided to move Thursday's proceedings to Time Warner Cable Arena to ensure the safety and security of our delegates and convention guests."

Kerrigan said "we share the disappointment" of the supporters who had signed up for credentials. "We encourage our community credential holders and Americans across the country to continue to come together with their friends and neighbors to watch and participate in history."

Weather forecasters had predicted a chance of thunderstorms for Charlotte on Thursday night.

Religion In 2012 Election: Labels Matter Less

(RNS) There aren't any white Protestants on the presidential ballot this year -- a first in American history.

Instead, the race features two Catholic candidates for vice president, and a Mormon Republican and African-American mainline Protestant for president.

Perhaps lucky for all of them, voters care more about issues such as social justice or gay marriage than they do about denominational brands.

That's particularly true for Republican Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan, who hope to woo evangelical voters that share their values rather than their theology.

It's a situation that probably would have baffled famous evangelicals such as the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, who used the issue of abortion in the 1970s and 1980s to turn evangelicals into a powerhouse voting bloc among Republicans.

"If you had told Jerry Falwell back in 1980 that by 2012 that there would not be a white Protestant on the ticket -- he would have died right there," said Shaun Casey, professor of Christian ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington.

But the same dynamic doesn't bother David French of Columbia, Tenn., a blogger at EvangelicalsforMitt.org. He wants a candidate who shares his values, not his theology.

"The real questions are: Is this person pro-life? Are they pro-marriage? Is this person really conservative?" French said.

The answer to all three of those questions is yes for Romney, he said, and that's more important than the fact that some evangelicals see Romney's Mormon beliefs as heretical.

He also said that Americans in general no longer worry about denominational labels. French, for example, grew up attending a Church of Christ and now attends a conservative Presbyterian church. A Pew Forum study in 2008 found that 44 percent of Americans have changed faiths at least once.

"We are moving well past being obsessed with religious affiliation or denominational labels," he said.

Casey, however, said having a Mormon and Catholic on the ticket could be risky for Republicans because both groups have been seen as suspect in the past by evangelicals.

Casey, who worked on religious outreach for President Obama's 2008 campaign, said the prospect of voting for a Mormon candidate may keep some evangelicals at home.

"I am not looking for a record evangelical turnout this time," said Casey, who wrote a book about the anti-Catholicism in 1960 that nearly kept John F. Kennedy out of the White House.

According to CNN exit polls in 2008, about three-quarters of evangelicals voted for Arizona Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee for president. During the election, McCain touted the fact that he attended a Baptist church.

A quarter voted for Obama, who joined a United Church of Christ in his 20s. Among the evangelicals who voted for Obama was John Lamb, a Southern Baptist from Nashville, Tenn. He plans to support Obama again. His main concern is immigration reform.

"I am dismayed at the lack of concern for the poor and for disenfranchised immigrants in this country," he said.

Lamb doubts that denominational labels make much difference to voters. He points out that former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were Southern Baptists, and evangelicals opposed them both.

But it's not just the voters who downplay denominational identity.

A recent study of voting patterns in Congress found that legislators follow ideology and party affiliation, no matter what their religion.

Bill D'Antonio, a senior fellow at the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies at the Catholic University of America, looked at roll call votes on abortion from 1977 to 2010.

Before 1980, the votes followed denominational lines. Mainline Protestants from both parties voted for abortion rights. More than half of Catholics from both parties voted against, according to the study, being published in a new book, "The Religious Factor in Congress: 1960 to 2010."

After 1980, the pattern changed. Most Democrats became supportive of abortion rights, and most Republicans became anti-abortion.

"Party now trumps religion," D'Antonio said.

In recent years, Democrats have tried to woo evangelical voters on the issue of social justice. That makes sense to Marcia Pally, author of "The New Evangelicals: Expanding the Vision of the Common Good."

"When the ordinary person in the pew starts working in a prison ministry program or food pantry, or goes to Haiti or Uganda and works to prevent malaria or build houses -- their priorities change," she said.

Still, Democrats' appeals to evangelicals have largely failed -- abortion is a big reason, Pally said -- and polls show that a growing number of evangelicals support Romney.

Robert Jones, president of the Washington-based Public Religion Research Institute, said evangelicals were skeptical about Romney at first. In October 2010, about 40 percent of evangelicals had a favorable view of the Republican candidate.

Once it became clear that Romney was Obama's opponent, that figure shot up to 68 percent, said Jones.

Employers Added 201,000 Jobs Last Month, Report Signals

The scene at a job fair in Harlem earlier this summer.

Three bits of good news about jobs were just released.

"Private-sector employment increased by 201,000 from July to August on a seasonally adjusted basis," according to the latest ADP National Employment Report.

And ADP revised up its estimate of the job growth in July ? to 173,000 from the 163,000 it previously reported.

"The August increase of 201,000, following a solid gain in July, supports the notion that the underlying trend in hiring has picked back up after slowing sharply during the spring," Joel Prakken, economist and chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, says in the ADP report.

?

Also this morning, the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that the number of layoffs announced by U.S. employers hit a 20-month low in August. It said that companies "announced plans to shed 32,239 workers from their payrolls in August ... the fewest number of monthly job cuts by US-based firms since December 2010, when layoffs totaled 32,004."

The firm cautioned against reading too much into the trend (layoffs have eased in recent months): "The three-month decline in the pace of downsizing may be further evidence of an improving economy or it may simply be a summer lull in jobcut activity."

Finally, the Employment and Training Administration just said that there were 365,000 first-time claims filed for jobless benefits last week, down from 377,000 the week before.

We'll hear much more about August's job growth and unemployment on Friday when the Bureau of Labor Statistics issues its data about the month. It's first swipe at July's figures put the unemployment rate at 8.3 percent and the number of jobs added to payrolls at 163,000.

While the ADP report and the BLS report have in recent months tended to generally agree on the job market trends, they don't necessarily track each other closely on the specifics. Bloomberg News says the median forecast of economist it has surveyed indicates BLS will report Friday that payrolls rose by 127,000 in August and the jobless rate stayed at 8.3 percent.

Prakken, though, says in the ADP report that the gain in jobs it detected "is strong enough to suggest that the national unemployment rate may have declined."

Google ties up with Indian mobile startup to drive mobile adoption among publishers

The partnership will help online publishers to reach out to more viewers, as they will use Google?s platform to monetise and track tractions and page traffic.

?It is a great validation for Indian startups as global companies are aggressively looking at our startup market. This will help us scale up our offering and reach out to more enterprises in and around India,? said Sharat Potharaju, co-founder and CEO, Mobstac, a provider of mobile interface to media and publishing firms.

?Google?s business basically depends on two groups ? advertisers and publishers. This partnership provides a win-win situation to both publishers and Google,? he said.

Mobstac, which has around 1,000 publishers as customers across the globe, is now planning to take its mobile platform to over 100,000 publishers in the next two years with this partnership in place.

The company, which raised an undisclosed funding from Accel Partners and Mumbai Angels last November, has already tied up renowned newspaper designer Mario Garcia to help publishers design the mobile version of their newspapers.

Potharaju said a significant portion of the works of Garcia in the last few years is based on mobile, with a growing number of Indian news papers and?publications looking to go mobile.

?What we think is that mobile (web) version should not be limited only to design. From a publication?s perspective, mobile is vastly different from other platforms and the time is not too far when publishers start providing a mobile-only content to their readers,? according to Potharaju.

He sees mobile emerging as the most preferable platform for publications and news papers to provide content three years from now.

?A mobile strategy is no more optional, but is crucial in engaging with customers,? Potharaju said.

Through this partnership with Google, Mobstac is bringing to publishers in India MobStac?s HTML5 mobile-first platform that is capable of delivering mobile websites and mobile apps across a wide-range of mobile devices.

MobStac claims its platform currently serves mobile websites in over 40 countries and 11 different languages.

Google has also partnered with two more startups from India ? ?Neuron Mediatech and Srishti Technet ? as part of the ?Lets Talk Mo? initiative.
