Ban on Iranian oil will upset our economy

Ban on Iranian oil will upset our economy

Our economy is bound to be affected by the closure of Strait of Hormuz route and US ban on the Iranian oil. Our economy is already facing a tough time as Rupee is at its lowest against the US Dollar.

'; } } } if (google_ads[0].bidtype == "CPC") { google_adnum = google_adnum + google_ads.length; } document.write(s); return; } google_ad_client = 'pub-9372192619832074'; google_ad_channel = '9759277419'; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '2'; google_ad_type = 'text'; google_image_size = '728x90'; google_feedback = 'on'; google_skip = google_adnum; // --> RUPEE IS getting weaker day by day in the global market and it is pathetically low at Rs 53 plus against the US Dollar. Crude may remain $ 100 or above in 2012 and the New Year is going to be a crucial year as far as the prices of Crude Oil are concerned. There is no way that the Crude oil will be cheaper; it is bound to vary between $ 100 and $ 120 per Barrel without fail.
The main factor will be the ongoing political conflict between Iran and the US. Certainly their conflict will affect the global market and so the economy of our Country too.

Iran has very recently threatened to cut off about fifth of the World?s Oil Supply by closing Strait of Hormuz. The unrest in Iraq will be yet another important factor in the prices of Crude Oil during the year 2012.

The United States and some of the European countries are very strongly pressurizing Iran in ending its nuclear programmes which Iran is unwilling to do.

Iran has already refused their move despite four rounds of sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. The US and other European countries have thus decided to boycott the Iranian oil.

US President Obama is going to sign legislation and if approved and enforced, he may impose harsh penalties on all the buyers of the Iranian Oil.

Besides with the closing of Strait of Hormuz route, the sailing of Iranian oil tankers will take much longer time to deliver the consignments and with extra time consumption, oil will become dearer too. Our economy is bound to be effected by the closure of the route and the ban.

SB Nation: Gruden set to coach, bound for Rams?

Jon Gruden currently works on ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast but a report states that Gruden is preparing to get back into coaching in 2012.

Dec 27, 2011 - Earlier this year ESPN announced a new contract agreement with Jon Gruden for the Monday Night Football broadcast but he may not be around to enjoy it. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune took a look at the changes coming to the San Diego Chargers and notes that Gruden wants to get back into coaching in 2012.

Acee reports that, if GM A.J. Smith is fired by the Chargers, the Rams will want to bring him -- and Gruden -- into the fold.

People familiar with Rams owner Stan Kroenke's plans said Monday that Kroenke is waiting for Spanos to make a move on Smith. If Smith is available, league and agent sources strongly indicated that Smith will be hired as Rams' general manager and bring along Jon Gruden as head coach.

Sources said Gruden has decided to return to coaching in 2012 and that his current employer, ESPN, is already preparing for his departure.

Acee has been talking about the Rams' interest in Smith for some time so this isn't totally new. The bit about Gruden potentially being involved is the new information. It's well known that Smith and Gruden have a good relationship.

Peter King recently suggested that the Rams job, which is expected to be open after head coach Steve Spagnuolo is fired, could be the best one available considering the presence of Sam Bradford and a top pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Perhaps that's why Gruden is reportedly interested.

Gruden has long been one of the A-list coaches during hiring season but he hasn't shown an interest in getting back into coaching since the Bucs fired him following the 2008 season. He took the ESPN job in 2009.

Post-Christmas bargains: Id Software iPhone apps on sale

Wolfenstein, Doom, Rage all now $1

For a limited time, three popular iOS games from Id Software, including the classic first-person shooter archetype Castle Wolfenstein (Classic Platinum version) are on sale for $1, a savings of up to $4 depending on the game. Castle Wolfenstein Classic Platinum is a touch-adapted version of the original game and includes all six original episodes. Also on sale are Doom Classic, Doom II RPG, Doom Resurrection, Rage and Rage HD.

The games feature a new touch-centric control system designed by original programmer John Carmack or can rely on tilt-based controls. Castle Wolfenstein Classic Platinum normally sells for $2, and a "lite" free version is also still available. Doom Classic is likewise a port of the original game with added touch controls, and includes all three original levels plus the "bonus level released later. It normally sells for $5.

Doom II RPG is a sequel to the 2005 turn-based Doom RPG game and like the other "RPG" titles includes advanced graphics and multiple character options along with NPCs, custom weapons and other features. It normally sells for $2. Doom Resurrection is the first version of Doom created specifically for the iPhone/iPod Touch platform and originally sold for $10, adding an all-new chapter to the saga. It is set up as more of a "rail shooter" than strictly FPS, and features iOS-specific controls. Both Doom II RPG and Doom Resurrection are iPhone/iPod Touch only.

Rage and Rage HD (the latter offering higher-resolution textures to take advantage of more recent models, but both versions are iOS universal) were made free for a week in August when Id Software ran a contest to see if the games could get 100,000 "likes" on Facebook. Both originally sold for $2 and is again a "rail shooter" game originally created for the iOS platform rather than a first-person shooter.

The games were last on sale at similar price points over Labor Day. There is no indication of when the sale will end.

    The perils of 'bite-size' science

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Short, fast, and frequent: Those 21st-century demands on publication have radically changed the news, politics, and culture -- for the worse, many say. Now an article in January's Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, aims a critique at a similar trend in psychological research. The authors, psychologists Marco Bertamini of the University of Liverpool and Marcus Munaf? of the University of Bristol, call it "bite-size science" -- papers based on one or a few studies and small samples.

"We're not against concision," says Bertamini. "But there are real risks in this trend toward shorter papers. The main risk is the increased rates of false alarms that are likely to be associated with papers based on less data."

The article dispatches several claimed advantages of shorter papers. Proponents say they're easier to read. Perhaps, say the authors, but more articles mean more to keep up with, more reviewing and editing -- not less work. Proponents laud the increased influence authors gain from more citations. Precisely, say the two -- but two short papers do not equal twice the scientific value of a longer one. Indeed, they might add up to less.

The reason: The smaller the experimental sample the greater the statistical deviations -- that is, the greater the inaccuracy of the findings. The results are sometimes flukes, with a bias toward false positives -- errors a wider ranging study with multiple experiments, plus replication in the same and in other labs, could correct. Strict word limits, moreover, mean cutting the details about previous research. The new results sound not only surprising but also novel. Write the authors: "A bit of ignorance helps in discovering 'new' things."

These surprising, "novel" results are exactly what editors find exciting and newsworthy and what even the best journals seek to publish, say the authors. The mainstream media pick up the "hot" stories. And the wrong results proliferate.

"Scientists are skeptics by training," says Bertamini. But the trend toward bite-size science leaves no time or space for that crucial caution. And that, argue the authors, is antithetical to good science.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Divorce: Maria Shriver Changing Her Mind?

Maria Shriver is now unsure if she wants to divorce Arnold Schwarzenegger.

According to sources close to the couple, Shriver is torn about whether to proceed with the split, partly because of her strong religious beliefs that do not include divorce, and for even more obvious reasons - the couple's four children.

    Maria Shriver, Arnold Schwarzenegger

Moreover, Arnold still desperately wants Maria back, and has been "extremely sweet" to her, making numerous gestures (including presents) to try to win Maria back.

The Expendables 2 star, for his part, has been hoping to reconcile from the moment the couple split, though it looked like a lost cause, given his infidelities.

Maria filed for divorce on July 1, though she moved out months earlier. She's already bought a mansion in Brentwood, Calif., which she's in the process of renovating.

Shriver was reportedly unhappy for years, but the revelation that Arnold had a love child with housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena years ago was the last straw.

    Or was it? Stay tuned.

Pakistani army denies intention to oust government (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's army chief denied accusations that the military is working to oust the country's civilian government amid tension over a secret memo sent to Washington earlier this year about an alleged coup, the military said Friday.

The memo scandal has heightened long-standing tensions between the army and the government at a time when the country is struggling to deal with a violent Taliban insurgency, a faltering economy and deteriorating relations with its most important ally, the United States.

Pakistani Taliban fighters attacked a paramilitary fort in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing one soldier and kidnapping 15 others, police said. The militants said in a statement issued after the attack that they would kill the abducted troops.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani claimed Thursday that there was a conspiracy under way to topple the government. He did not specifically point to the military, but said the army must be answerable to the parliament and cannot operate as a "state within a state."

Army chief Gen. Pervez Ashfaq Kayani denied the allegations and pledged the force would continue to support democracy in Pakistan.

"The army is fully cognizant of its constitutional obligations and responsibilities," Kayani said Thursday, during a trip near the Afghan border. His remarks were cited in an army statement Friday.

The army is the strongest institution in Pakistan and has ruled the country for much of its 64-year history after carrying out a series of coups. Analysts have expressed doubt that a coup is likely at this time, but have speculated the army may try to pressure the country's embattled president to resign over his alleged role in the memo scandal.

Pakistan's former ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, has been accused of being behind the memo, which asked Washington to help avert a supposed coup in the wake of the unilateral American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town in May. Haqqani allegedly acted with President Asif Ali Zardari's support.

Both Haqqani and the president have denied the allegations, but the envoy resigned in the wake of the scandal. Pressure on the government, especially Zardari, has increased this week as the Supreme Court opened a hearing into the memo.

Kayani said talk of a coup was "being used as a bogey to divert the focus from the real issues," a likely reference to the scandal. He said "issues of national security need to be considered on merit alone."

The political crisis could distract the army from its fight against the Pakistani Taliban, who aim to topple the government, partly because of the country's alliance with the U.S.

The nearly three dozen Pakistani Taliban fighters who attacked a paramilitary fort in Tank district with assault rifles before dawn Friday burned down buildings and captured a significant amount of weapons, said local police chief Ejaz Abid.

One soldier was killed and two were wounded in the fighting, Abid said. Another 15 are still missing and believed to have been kidnapped, he said.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press and said it was carried out to avenge the death of a local Taliban commander. He claimed 30 soldiers were kidnapped.

But another Taliban commander who said he carried out the attack, Asmatullah Shaheen, told the AP that he had 15 soldiers in his custody. Some others managed to escape after the militants captured them, he said.

Abid, the police chief, said at least 22 soldiers were missing originally, but seven managed to return.

Shaheen said the militant commander being avenged, Taj Gul, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in October in South Waziristan, an important sanctuary for the Pakistani Taliban next to Tank.

The militants attacked the Pakistani soldiers in response because of the country's alliance with the U.S., he said.

Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said the militants have no intention of bargaining for the kidnapped soldiers' release and intend to kill them.

"We are going to cut these soldiers into pieces one by one, and we will send these pieces to their commanders," said Ehsan.

Three Legends Remembered: Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Taylor, Amy Winehouse (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Many notable deaths marked the year 2011. Among them, the following individuals stand out as people whose defiance of convention forever changed their respective industries. A technological innovator, a humanitarian actress and a soulful songstress rewrote the rules and redefined the very meaning of excellence. As a result, our expectations of greatness have been altered forever.

    Steve Jobs: A Technological Innovator

It could be argued that Steve Jobs is one of the sole reasons that technology revolutionized the world as quickly as it did. Due to his practical, down-to-earth focus on the user experience, he single-handedly made computers cool. He focused on humans, and what we wanted computers to do, and brought to life the dreams we didn't know we had. He seemed to have an innate ability to tap into the collective unconscious; he intuitively knew what people wanted from technology and ushered us into the future, putting the unimaginable at our very fingertips.

    Elizabeth Taylor: A Humanitarian Actress

A child star turned movie star, and movie star turned activist, Liz Taylor played many roles throughout her life. Her performances made her the leading lady on the silver screen. Her work in the fight against HIV and AIDS made her a leader in humanitarianism. Her championing of Jewish causes made her a legend. Not many people would offer themselves up as a replacement hostage in order to secure someone else's freedom. Elizabeth Taylor, however, did exactly during the Entebbe Skyjacking in 1976, successively integrating guts and glamour.

    Amy Winehouse: A Soulful Songstress

Though the words "tortured" and "tormented" have been used repeatedly to describe this iconic singer/songwriter, those were undoubtedly the exact qualities that made her music so mesmerizing. She publicly and unabashedly wrestled her demons through her lyrics and her raw, unpretentious sound. Where others try to capture deep emotions artistically, Amy Winehouse effortlessly channeled, and expertly conveyed, the darkest elements of the human soul.

Each of these individuals personified determination, genius and talent. Though their contributions to society were markedly different, each had a larger-than-life persona and left behind a legacy that will be long remembered. Steve Jobs changed the way we relate to technology, Elizabeth Taylor created our definition of star and Amy Winehouse reinvented the very idea of soul.

As?we already knew, the system itself will carry a $250 price tag, but up until now the pricing of its storage cards and other accessories were a mystery. Many thought the system's memory cards would cost upwards of $130 for 32GB, but thankfully that's not the case. The official list of release dates and pricing for PS Vita add-ons can be seen below.

    4 GB Memory Card February 15, 2012 $19.99
    8 GB Memory Card February 15, 2012 $29.99
    16 GB Memory Card February 15, 2012 $59.99
    32 GB Memory Card February 15, 2012 $99.99
Starter Kit with Memory Card February 15, 2012 $39.99
    In-Ear Headset February 15, 2012 $19.99
    Carrying Case February 15, 2012 $19.99
    Travel Pouch February 15, 2012 $19.99
    Protective Film (2 pack) February 15, 2012 $9.99
    Card Case February 15, 2012 $5.99
    Cradle February 15, 2012 $19.99
    Portable Charger Spring 2012 $49.99
    AC Adaptor February 15, 2012 $14.99
    Car Adaptor Spring 2012 $14.99
    USB Cable February 15, 2012 $14.99

We went?hands-on with the Vita during?E3, and were mighty pleased with what we saw. While Sony's pricing scheme for memory ? crucial when downloading games, movies, and music ? is a bit higher than we had hoped, it's not entirely unreasonable, and we're still very much looking forward to February 22.

GOP Official Unseated Over Voter Fraud Charges

An Indianapolis county court has removed Indiana Secretary of State Charles White from office on charges of voter fraud relating to his 2010 election.

The Marion County Circuit Court issued the order late Thursday afternoon in response to a Democratic Party civil suit alleging that White lied about his residency during the 2010 election to retain salary from a town councilman post he held. White is currently facing criminal charges stemming from the voter fraud allegations. In Indiana, the secretary of state also serves as the chief elections official.

The court order requires the state's Recount Commission to void White's 2010 election certification and award the secretary of state's post to runner-up Vop Osili (D). Osili was elected last month as a councilman for the Indianapolis-Marion County government.

WTHR in Indiana reports that the Recount Commission is seeking a stay of the ruling pending White's appeal, and requesting that White remain secretary of state pending a final outcome of the civil case.

The court's decision said that it does not "imply" that White's actions "were or were not fraudulent or committed a crime," but rather that he "knowingly registered in the wrong precinct." The court is deferring any questions of illegal activity for decision during the coming criminal trial, which begins on Jan. 30.

If convicted while still in office, White would be automatically unseated. Under this procedure, Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) would appoint a new secretary of state.

White has been accused by local Democrats of stating his address as the home shared with his son and ex-wife, Nicole Mills, in Fishers, Ind., while actually living in a condo in another part of town. The house that White and Mills shared is in the second council district, which White represented, while his new condo was not within the district lines. The court decision said that White made $12,000 annually as a councilman.

According to the court decision, White lived within his former Council district in a rental apartment for a period following his divorce and in his ex-wife's basement for several months prior to his second marriage. Court papers say he signed mortgage documents in February 2010, but noted he was traveling as part of his statewide campaign and sleeping in his car at points.

The court reported that White had not changed his voter registration until September, after his June nomination by the state GOP for secretary of state and his May remarriage. The ruling said that White had moved his belongings into the new condo immediately following his second marriage.

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio walks of the floor of the House chamber on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in Washington. The House rejected legislation to extend a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for two months, drawing a swift rebuke from President Barack Obama that Republicans were threatening higher taxes on 160 million workers on Jan. 1. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Careening toward a politically toxic tax hike, President Barack Obama implored House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday to get behind a two-month stopgap until a longer deal could be struck early next year, calling it the only real way out of a mess that is threatening the paychecks of 160 million workers and isolating House Republicans.

In a weary Washington, the outreach accomplished little. All sides seemed to end the day where they began, with heavy political and economic consequences at stake.

Boehner remained insistent on a full-year extension of the existing payroll tax cut before Jan. 1, urging Obama to haul Senate Democrats back to town to talk to his chosen negotiators. "Let's get this done today," Boehner told Obama, according to a speaker's aide, who required anonymity to characterize a private conversation.

But the Capitol was emptying out fast, and the Senate showed no inclination to return, having already passed a bipartisan two-month tax cut it thought had settled the matter.

For taxpayers, and for an economy starting to show some life again, the standoff was all holiday gloom.

Barring any action by Congress, Social Security payroll taxes will go up almost $20 a week for a worker making a $50,000 salary ? that's $40 less for a typical paycheck or $1,000 over the whole year. Almost 2 million people would lose unemployment benefits as well.

The political risks seemed only to deepen, too, particularly for House Republicans. They appeared poised to take the biggest blame for a tax increase even while pushing for a deeper one.

The reliably conservative editorial page of The Wall Street Journal blasted both Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell, the GOP leader, for how they handled the matter. "The GOP leaders have somehow managed the remarkable feat of being blamed for opposing a one-year extension of a tax holiday that they are surely going to pass," the paper's editorial said.

In a year of legislative brinksmanship remarkable even by Washington standards, the latest fight spilled into the lap of Republican candidates running for president.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich chastised Congress, particularly the Senate, for failing to extend the 2 percentage point tax cut for a full year.

"They can't figure out how to pass a one-year extension, so the Senate leaves town?" Gingrich remarked while campaigning in Iowa. "It's an absurd dereliction of duty."

Rival Mitt Romney refused to take a position, again steering clear of Washington's hot policy debate.

"I'm not going to get into the back-and-forth on the congressional sausage-making process," the former Massachusetts governor told reporters after events in New Hampshire. "I hope they're able to sit down and work out a solution that works for the American people."

But the White House made clear the time for talks were over for this year.

"The negotiating has happened already," presidential spokesman Jay Carney said, referring to the Senate bill the White House insists was sealed with Boehner's blessing.

Boehner disputes that he ever gave a nod of support to the two-month tax cut that many in his caucus oppose.

He and other House members call it a poor and unworkable tax policy.

Obama also called the Senate's Democratic leader, Harry Reid, and praised him for the bipartisan tax-cut bill with McConnell that passed the Senate.

Obama did most of the talking in his 10-minute call to Boehner.

The president made clear to Boehner that this was essentially his last legislative chance: There was no other option under consideration except the two-month tax bill, no surprise last-minute deal, and no real chance that Reid was calling the Senate back, according an administration official who spoke anonymously to describe the private phone call.

From Boehner's perspective, the only real progress was that Obama had shown engagement with the speaker that he had not in weeks, according to an aide who also spoke anonymously to describe internal thinking.

Obama for months has called for a year-long extension of the tax cut; he would prefer that it be deepened, too, although that idea never went anywhere in Congress. Obama reiterated to Boehner that he wants to work out a full-year deal with Congress but there is no time for that to be done right now.

Overall, the stalemate has centered on how to pay for another year's tax cut without adding to the deficit. That is the debate ahead ? if the two-month deal gets done first.

Boehner's reaction gave no hints of a breakthrough, even though House Republicans appear increasingly isolated. They're not getting support from Senate Republicans and are battling against a president whose approval numbers, while not impressive, are better than theirs.

Obama was to have left Washington by now for a Christmas vacation in Hawaii, where his wife and two daughters have been since the weekend.

Instead, after speaking to Boehner and Reid, he found a different escape from the White House.

He took his dog, Bo, and went holiday shopping.

(AP) ? Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water rushing through the southern Philippines while people were asleep, killing more than 200 with scores missing, officials said Saturday.

Some of the dead were swept out to sea from the worst-hit coastal cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the Mindanao region, which is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common elsewhere in the archipelago nation.

Cagayan de Oro city councilor Alvin Bacal said 107 people had died in the flooding in his city alone, citing military figures.

In Iligan, 79 bodies were recovered in the city after more than 12 hours of continuous rain from Tropical Storm Washi overflowed a river and sent muddy floodwaters cascading from nearby mountains, Mayor Lawrence Cruz said. About 250 people are unaccounted for in Iligan, said military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang.

A man in Cagayan de Oro said he heard a cry for help around 10 p.m. while the floodwaters were still low.

"Suddenly, there was a very strong rush of water," the man, who was not identified, told a local TV station.

Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home late Friday when they heard a loud "swooshing sound" and water quickly rose ankle deep inside his home. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor's two-story house.

"It was a good thing because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11 feet (3.3 meters)," the height of the ceiling of his house, he said.

Civil defense administrator Benito Ramos said 18 drowned in floodwaters in central Negros Oriental province, whose southern tip was nipped by the eye of the storm later Saturday.

The floodwaters were waist-high in some neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. Scores of residents escaped the floods by climbing onto the roofs of their homes, Cruz said.

Those missing included prominent radio broadcaster Enie Alsonado, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Cruz said.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro said that about 20,000 residents of the city had been affected and that evacuees were packed in temporary shelters.

Television footage showed muddy water rushing in the streets, sweeping away all sorts of debris. Thick layers of mud coated streets where the waters had subsided. One car was shown to have been carried over a concrete fence.

Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the muddy streets.

Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea by the raging floodwaters. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro, said disaster official Teddy Sabuga-a.

About 120 more were rescued off Opol township, closer to the city, he added.

He said an island in the middle of the Cagayan de Oro river was inundated, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or people missing.

Cruz said the coast guard and other rescuers were scouring the waters off his coastal city for survivors or bodies that may have been swept to the sea.

An 80-year-old woman drowned after being trapped in the first floor of her flooded home in Zamboanga del Norte province. A 30-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy also drowned, said provincial disaster officer Dennis Tenorio.

Washi, the 19th storm to hit the Philippines this year, came ashore in eastern Mindanao and blanketed the region with thick rain clouds 250 miles (400 kilometers) in diameter.

It quickly cut across the region overnight and was over the Sulu Sea by midmorning Saturday. It was then headed for Palawan province southwest of Manila and was expected to cross the narrow province before dawn Sunday, said forecaster Leny Ruiz.

Ruiz said the weather bureau's records show that storms that follow Washi's track come only once in about 12 years.

Lucilo Bayron, vice mayor of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, told ABS-CBN television he has already mobilized emergency crews but local officials have not ordered an evacuation "because it's not raining and the weather is still fine here."

Ramos, a former army general, said by law two army divisions ? about 20,000 men ? in Mindanao and part of the central Philippines are supposed to help with rescue and relief work, backed up by hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers. However, he could not give an estimate of how many are actually involved.

Col. Leopoldo Galon, military spokesman for the eastern section of Mindanao, said 420 soldiers have been assigned for disaster duties. There was no immediate comment from the western Mindanao military spokesman.

Ramos said the high casualties in Mindanao could be attributed "partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms" despite four days of warnings by officials of an approaching storm.

He also said heavy rains fell on nearby Bukidnon province's vast pineapple plantations, which sit on a plateau that drains rainfall through a river system that runs through Cagayan de Oro. Mountains near Iligan were denuded, also causing the flash floods and mud flows that swamped the city, he said.

Storms and typhoons that normally pass through the northern and central Philippines are pushed farther south of the country by cold winds during the northern hemisphere's winter season late in the year.

Back-to-back typhoons in September left more than 100 people dead in the northern Philippines.

Gingrich pokes rivals in new TV ad (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Newt Gingrich chided his GOP presidential opponents in a new TV ad for going negative as Mitt Romney sought anew Thursday to cast his chief challenger as an unreliable leader, a preview of likely lines of criticism ahead of the final GOP presidential debate before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

"These are challenging and important times for America. We want and deserve solutions," Gingrich said in the ad running in Iowa, trying to stay above the fray while also poking at his opponents. "Others seem to be more focused on attacks rather than moving the country forward. That's up to them."

While Gingrich didn't name any of his fellow Republican rivals, he clearly was referring to them. Chief among them is Romney and his allies who have launched an aggressive effort to derail the former House speaker during campaign events, media interviews and, in the case of a super PAC aligned with Romney, TV ads.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul also is assailing Gingrich on television. And Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum have stepped up their criticism of Gingrich as all work to stunt his rise in Iowa and elsewhere less than three weeks before the first votes are cast in the GOP nominating contests.

All were campaigning in the state before meeting on stage in Sioux City late Thursday for a debate sponsored by Fox News Channel and the Iowa Republican Party.

With time running short, Romney's campaign redoubled its efforts to cast Gingrich as an unreliable leader on a host of fronts, releasing campaign statements and web videos assailing him.

One such video showed an old clip of Gingrich praising Romney, saying: "Gov. Romney in his business career created more jobs than the entire Obama Cabinet combined, so he could actually talk about it."

In a statement, Romney himself chastised Gingrich for calling Rep. Paul Ryan's Medicare plan, which is popular among many conservatives, "right-wing social engineering." And, Romney pointed to a comment Gingrich made last week to the "Coffee & Markets" podcast, where Gingrich said: "If there's a program which is very, very unpopular, should Republicans impose it? And my answer is no! When we passed welfare reform, 92 percent of the country favored it, including 88 percent of people on welfare. (Ronald) Reagan ran to be a popular president, not to maximize suicide."

Romney argued that Gingrich was calling Ryan's plan suicide and added: "I know it can be popular with some people to use extreme language, but we're talking about the presidency of the United States."

Romney's campaign also highlighted support from a group of former Reagan administration officials, although many of the names had been previously announced. The announcement was a jab at Gingrich, who has begun been selling himself as a "Reaganite." After a candidates' debate last week, Gingrich's campaign immediately blasted out a statement declaring, "Newt Gingrich claims the Reagan mantle."
