For alumni, few answers from Penn State president (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Penn State University President Rodney Erickson had comforting words but few answers to tough questions at a town hall meeting with alumni in Pittsburgh in the wake of the school's child sex abuse scandal.

Erickson is attempting to repair the school's image more than two months after former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's arrest on abuse charges brought controversy, criticism and contemplation to Penn State.

Erickson was greeted by polite applause at the 90-minute meeting, the first of three sessions with alumni this week. The second one is being held Thursday evening near Philadelphia.

He said critics have accused the university of having problems with openness and communication but that the school "will do better in the future."

But Jean Spadacene was shocked to learn that Erickson hasn't even spoken to Joe Paterno since the longtime coach was fired in early November.

"I would think one of the first things on his to-do list would be to send a note to Joe. And he didn't do that," she said.

Dave Hrinak, a 1980 graduate who lives near Pittsburgh, said before the meeting that he has one main message for Erickson.

"Never again let anybody get as much power as Joe Paterno had," Hrinak said, adding that he feels that way even though he respects Paterno and is a season ticket holder at football games.

The most sustained and passionate applause of the evening came from a questioner who suggested that the entire board of trustees step down, but Erickson failed to build on the emotion.

"I think the board will have to make those decisions," said Erickson, who is also scheduled to speak to alumni in New York City on Friday.

Asked for how many defendants Penn State is paying legal fees, Erickson replied that was "a difficult question to answer." He said the school will start posting details of what the crisis has cost in legal and other fees next week.

After one questioner called the treatment of Paterno "unconscionable" on Wednesday, Erickson responded by saying that "We will certainly want to honor Joe as the future unfolds."

Pressed for details later in the evening on what that meant, he replied that there were "no plans in place yet, but there will be."

Erickson also said that the board of trustees "will certainly have to speak to how that decision" to fire Paterno was made, but he didn't criticize the board.

"No, I supported their decision," Erickson said after the event.

Paterno, a legendary figure in sports, was replaced last week by New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. He has described the scandal as one of the great sorrows of his life and has said that in hindsight he wishes he had done more after allegations against Sandusky were raised.

The alumni meeting came as investigators re-interview current and former employees of Penn State's athletic department as part of the case against the 67-year-old Sandusky, who's charged with sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. Sandusky remains out on $250,000 bail while awaiting trial.

Two Penn State administrators are facing charges they lied to a grand jury investigating Sandusky and failed to properly report suspected child abuse. Gary Schultz, a former vice president, and Tim Curley, the athletic director, have denied the allegations and await trial.

Although Sandusky has maintained his innocence, at one point Erickson seemed to imply that abuse did occur.

"There are victims out there, and we need to do the right thing by those victims," Erickson said.

Alumni want transparency, said Virginia A. Feinman, a television news assignment editor who plans to attend the New York forum.

Feinman is a member of Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, a group that believes Paterno's firing and the ousting of Erickson's predecessor, Graham Spanier, were mishandled. The organization said it hopes to back candidates to run for elected alumni seats on the board of trustees.

Erickson said Tuesday he will step down when his contract ends in 2014.

Naked black-hole hearts live in the fifth dimension

Read more: "Why physicists can't avoid a creation event"

"IT SEEMS very rude to come to someone's party and tell him that he lost a bet again," said cosmologist Luis Lehner of the Perimeter Institute in Ontario, Canada. Lehner did it anyway.

He was speaking at a meeting to celebrate Stephen Hawking's 70th birthday. The bet in question was over whether a point of infinite density and space-time curvature, known as a singularity and usually found at the centre of a black hole, can also exist in a naked form without its black hole. At a singularity, all our existing physical laws go out the window. This doesn't normally matter because the black hole that surrounds the singularity is ringed by a one-way membrane called an event horizon, which lets light and information in, but not out. That means the singularity cannot affect anything beyond the event horizon.

Near a naked singularity, however, things would become bewildering as we would no longer be able to predict the fate of anything in its line of sight. "It might not actually do anything nasty, but we have lost predictive power," says Lehner. "I couldn't tell you if this glass would be sitting on the table tomorrow."

In 1991, Hawking bet Kip Thorne and John Preskill of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena that all singularities are clothed. Six years later he lost, when situations emerged where naked singularities can exist, although they are unstable and vanish or retreat behind an event horizon with the tiniest perturbation.

Lehner has now proposed another situation where naked singularities might exist: in the extra dimensions proposed by string theory. The rub is that this time, they aren't unusual.

To understand why, think of black holes as points in the four dimensions we experience - three of space and one of time. These become "black strings" when extended into a fifth dimension of space (see diagram).

Black strings are unstable and break up into smaller black holes like a stream of water splitting into droplets. Lehner showed that at the point where a smaller black hole pinches off from the stream, the black hole's radius is zero, which means its density is infinite. In other words, it is a naked singularity. Lehner showed this will happen any time you have a black string.

Thorne, the beneficiary of the bet, was in the audience and said the study was "beautiful work". Of course this comes with a big caveat: we only need to worry about these naked singularities if the universe has five dimensions - something that isn't yet clear. String theory suggests there are at least five dimensions, but cosmologists without a stake in the bet might hope that it is proved wrong. Otherwise they will have their work cut out explaining the laws of physics at a naked singularity.

Until 2015, a team of experts in political science and simulation and computing technologies, belonging to a consortium of 17 partners from Europe and China, will be developing advanced artificial intelligence tools to collect, analyse and interpret automatically the opinions expressed by users through the internet with the aim of assessing politicians in the design and implementation of social policies.

The research project FUPOL is financed by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union with 9.1 million Euros. At first, the project will focus on assessing urban policies and decision-making processes of local authorities. The technologies and innovations developed however will be generic and available for all political levels and areas.

The system will be able automatically to collect, analyse and interpret the opinions expressed by internet users thanks to tools which classify the large amount of information generated by social networks. The aim is to make it easier for governing bodies to comprehend the needs of its citizens and improve social policies. Using simulation models, the programme eventually will be capable of predicting benefits and shortcomings of policies during the design phase.

UAB researchers participating in the project, led by Miguel Mjica Mota and Miguel ngel Piera from the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering, will be in charge of developing social behaviour simulation models. At international level, the project is coordinated by Peter Sonntagbauer, researcher at Cellent AG (AT), Austrian subsidiary of a multinational corporation with headquarters in Germany.

According to UAB researcher Miguel Mjica, "FUPOL aims to provide a completely new approach to traditional politics. The processing of information made available by social networks will change the way in which politicians communicate with the people and their decision-making processes. The project will contribute to the sustainable development of cities and will lower the barrier between citizens and politicians."

The project already has generated a large amount of interest, even outside the European Union. One of the project partners is the city of Yantai, in the Shandong Province of the People's Republic of China, while some of the members of "Major Cities of Europe" (MCE) have been chosen as pilot cities. The working plan includes five field research projects in China, Croatia, Cyprus, Italy and United Kingdom, which will focus on the political areas of urban planning, land use and sustainable development, migration and urban segregation.

Possible tornado injures 10 in North Carolina (Reuters)

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) ? A possible mid-winter tornado has struck a small western North Carolina community, injuring 10 people, two seriously, authorities said on Thursday.

The violent storm hit Ellenboro, in Rutherford County, about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday and the destruction extended over a three-mile area, said Tommy Blanton with the county's emergency management office.

Crews were working on Thursday to clear debris and restore power, he said. The National Weather Service has sent a team to the area to investigate the storm.

Asked if the storm was a tornado, Pat Tanner, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Greer, South Carolina, said: "As far as we know, it was."

He said a mid-winter tornado would not be unusual since temperatures in the region have been about 10 degrees above normal for the past month or so.

Most tornadoes take place in the spring.

Mars-bound NASA rover adjusts course to red planet (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Firing on all engines, NASA's latest rover to Mars executed a course adjustment Wednesday that put it on track for a landing on the red planet in August.

Deep space antennas monitored the one-ton rover nicknamed Curiosity as it fired its thrusters in a choreographed three-hour maneuver.

"We're a big step closer to our entry point at the Martian atmosphere," said Arthur Amador of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The course correction is the most important task Curiosity will perform during its 352-million-mile trip to Mars, but it's not unprecedented. Previous robotic explorers have had to adjust their paths several times en route to landing.

As NASA celebrated Curiosity's latest milestone, Russia's space agency grappled with its doomed Phobos-Ground probe.

Bound for a Martian moon, Phobos-Ground became stranded in Earth orbit soon after launching in November. After several failed attempts to put it back on course, pieces of the probe could plunge through Earth's atmosphere as early as this weekend.

Meanwhile, Curiosity had racked up 80 million miles and was traveling at 10,200 mph relative to the Earth.

The action began Tuesday when engineers uploaded commands to Curiosity's on-board computers. On cue, it refined its trajectory without human interference ? thrusting 200 times in short bursts Wednesday and increasing its speed by 12 mph.

"It was pretty darn flawless," Amador said.

The team will spend the next week testing the spacecraft's communication system and other components. A second smaller path adjustment was planned for March.

If Curiosity did not tweak its route, it would miss Mars altogether because it was initially not aimed at the planet. Engineers did this by design to prevent the upper stage of the rocket that launched the spacecraft from hitting Mars.

Now that Curiosity has separated and is on its way, the team has several chances to fine-tune its path before touchdown. During the interplanetary cruise, the rover is tucked in a shell that will protect it during its plunge through the upper Martian atmosphere.

Curiosity, whose formal name is the Mars Science Laboratory, is aiming for a 96-mile-wide crater near the Martian equator that boasts a towering mountain in the center. The six-wheel, nuclear-powered rover planned to drive to the lower flanks and examine the layered deposits to determine whether the area once had conditions capable of supporting microbial life.

Armed with a toolkit including a laser to zap into bedrock and a jackhammer, Curiosity is more sophisticated than previous Mars surface spacecraft. Despite its capabilities, it won't be able to detect life. Instead, it will hunt for the chemical building blocks of life during its two-year, $2.5 billion mission.

Since Curiosity is too heavy to use a cocoon of airbags or rely solely on its parachute to safely reach the planet's surface, NASA will attempt a new type of landing using a so-called sky crane system.

The parachute will detach and a rocket-powered platform will fire its engines, then lower the rover to the ground on a tether similar to the way hovering heavy-lift helicopters lower huge loads at the end of a cable.

Even before arrival, Curiosity has not been idle. Several weeks after launch, it turned on its radiation detector to monitor high-energy particles streaming from the sun and exploding stars. Once at Mars, it will measure radiation levels on the surface.

Huntsman is Only GOP Candidate Who Can Actually Beat Obama (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | When Mitt Romney attacked Jon Huntsman for his service in the Obama administration on Saturday, he had no idea the former Utah governor would get the last word. The Los Angeles Times reported that the allegations continued the next day on a NBC/Facebook roundtable debate. For me, that was proof Huntsman really is the only Republican who can actually win the White House this year.

The former Utah governor served as ambassador to China until April, when he resigned to enter the Republican race to replace his former boss. The fact Huntsman served under a Democrat president isn't something to criticize him about -- to the contrary. It's admirable that he was able to serve our country in a way that found common ground with a politically-opposed president. I would be concerned by any president that couldn't find room for people with opposing ideas.

I've kind of been all over the board about Huntsman. I like the guy. I like his wholesome looks and his "hip" connection to young voters -- he plays rock music. In many ways, he's the best candidate the challenge Obama in the fall, but he just can't seem to get a "moment" in the spotlight with the stage so crowded.

Politico described him as a "formidable entry in the ? GOP field," and a fiscal conservative, with the most foreign policy experience of any GOP candidate. That's exactly what the Republican Party needs. The religious right has driven the party into hard-line issues that alienate the country and are just plain wrong. Huntsman takes a much softer stand on many of those issues -- something that should appeal to Democrats and independents.

He is the child of a billionaire businessman and pretty successful in business in his own right. He knows Wall Street and the halls of diplomacy. He's a "fixer" and had one of the highest popularity rates of any of the nation's governors.

Obama will be hard pressed to criticize a man that served admirably in his own administration. On foreign trade and domestic issues, Huntsman can go toe-to-toe with the sitting president, and he understands the Chinese. In fact, he speaks it too. That's the person we need negotiating the next trade agreement with the largest holder of U.S. debt.

Huntsman is also -- in some respects -- a new kind of Republican. That's what the party needs right now. In fact, that's what the nation needs right now.

Blue Jackets Fire Coach Arniel

The Columbus Blue Jackets fired coach Scott Arniel on Monday. Assistant Todd Richards will lead the struggling team on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. Columbus dropped to 11-25-5 on the season after being felled by reigning Hart Trophy recipient Corey Perry's hat trick on Sunday. The Anaheim Ducks skated to a 7-4 triumph to keep Columbus in the basement of the NHL with 27 points. Arniel replaced Ken Hitchcock as the Blue Jackets' fifth coach in team history. The 49-year-old Arniel was in his second season at the helm of Columbus, which limped to a 13th-place finish in the West in 2010-11. Columbus currently sits 26 points out of first place in the Central Division. The Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks are locked in a three-way atop the division.

Cubify brings 3D printer and Kinect app to CES

Cubify
At this point it's kinda tough to get excited about 3D printing -- actual devices and services are a dime a dozen, but Cubify has a decidedly user-friendly vibe working in its favor. 3D Systems is rolling in to CES with its Cube 3D printer, but it'll also be showing off Cubify.com and its new Kinect-To-Print app. The app will allow users to design objects with "coloring book simplicity," then have them printed up and shipped to their door, or they can post their creations to the web for others to purchase and earn cash. The site will also be prepopulated with a selection of games and other custom objects ready to be printed on demand either at home on the Cube 3D or by the company and shipped out to customers. Cubify.com will go live in a beta version on January 10th and, while you wait, you can check out the video and PR after the break.

AcerCloud will sync your photos, docs and media

By Rosa Golijan

Acer

At the CES 2012 conference, Acer introduced its?upcoming AcerCloud service.?AcerCloud will use Acer's Always Connect technology to keep all your media synced (and easily retrievable) ??even when your main device is in sleep, standby, or hibernation mode.

AcerCloud has three main parts:?PicStream, AcerCloud Docs, and clear.fi Media. As you may guess by the features' names, they are ?respectively???for photos, documents, and multimedia.

Using AcerCloud, you will be able to take photos using a smartphone and watch them appear almost instantly on your main PC ??without having to worry about manually transferring files.?You can also purchase movies on your PC and then proceed to watch them on a tablet or smartphone device.

But how is the service able to sync your media when your main device is in sleep, standby, or hibernation mode??Simple: It can just wake the PC up through Wi-Fi, using the Always On technology.

When the AcerCloud launches, in the second quarter of 2012, it will be bundled with all new Acer consumer PCs.?

Japan defence minister 'faces sack' over gaffes

Japan's defence minister faces the sack, reports said Saturday, after a series of gaffes including describing the rape of a 12-year-old girl by three US servicemen as a "sexual orgy incident".

Yasuo Ichikawa, who has only been in office for four months, was censured by parliament's opposition-controlled upper house in December, as was consumer affairs minister Kenji Yamaoka, who backed an alleged pyramid sales firm.

Both men are expected to be removed in a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, Jiji Press news agency and other media reported.

Noda, who took office in early September, is considering dismissing them in a bid to gain cooperation from the opposition to pass a budget and a package of tax and social reform bills through parliament, they said.

Ichikawa has committed or been linked to a series of gaffes that have offended the people of the island of Okinawa, reluctant hosts to a large US military presence.

One of his officials was dismissed after likening the government's foot-dragging on plans to relocate the US military base to forewarning a woman of the intention to rape her.

In 1995 three US servicemen raped a 12-year-old girl on Okinawa, a crime that galvanised islanders' resentment of the US presence.

Ichikawa claimed not to know the details of the rape, and at a press conference called it a "sexual orgy incident".

He also skipped a palace banquet in November in honour of visiting royals from Bhutan in favour of a political fundraiser he said was "more important".

As well as being admonished for alleged ties with shady business groups before he became consumer affairs minister, Yamaoka has come under fire over comments he made in a New Year address.

"I privately think the next biggest tsunami that will come soon may be the collapse of the euro," he said, remarks seen as belittling the victims of Japan's March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which left 20,000 dead or missing.

Noda, the latest holder of Japan's revolving-door premiership, is expected to conduct the reshuffle possibly on Friday or in the following week, before parliament reopens in late January, the reports said.

The main opposition Liberal Democratic Party has threatened to boycott the legislature if the pair stay in place.

Jiji said Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura had told all ministers to make sure that they attend a cabinet meeting set for Friday, while economy minister Motohisa Furukawa had cancelled a January 11-15 visit to the US.

But the reshuffle could be delayed to early next month to coincide with the planned launch of a new government agency tasked with reconstructing areas devastated by the March disasters, the reports said.

Kyodo News agency said the reshuffle would be minor.

Possible candidates to succeed Ichikawa as defence minister include ruling-party lawmaker Yuichiro Hata, a son of former prime minister Tsutomu Hata, Kyodo said quoting anonymous sources.

In recent polls ratings for Noda's government have fallen to 30-40 percent from 50-60 percent soon after its launch, amid criticism over his handling of the nuclear crisis that followed the quake-tsunami and plans to raise taxes.
