Why Do Oil Companies Favor the GOP, When They Fare Better Under Dems?

The fossil-fuel industry has long given more money to Republicans than Democrats, but in this presidential campaign it has skewed far further: from 2-to-1 or 4-to-1 in the past, the ratio of campaign donations is now at 8-to-1?in the Republicans? favor (see chart above). Yet the industry has in fact fared better under recent Democratic than Republican presidents, according to a new investment bank report.

In a Sept. 27 note to clients, Oppenheimer?s Fadel Gheit writes that each party has held the White House for half of the last 24 years. Under Democrats, the exchange-traded index of leading oil and gas companies, called XOI, rose an average of 9 percent a year. Under Republicans, the XOI rose 7 percent annually.

ExxonMobil specifically (the industry?s second-largest contributor to Republican causes, with $1.8 million poured into the campaign) has had a 10 percent average annual rise in its share price under Democrats, and 7 percent under Republicans, Gheit writes. (Consumers have fared better under Democrats as well: crude oil prices rose 10 percent a year under Republicans over the last quarter century, compared with 7 percent under Democrats. Natural gas prices rose 6 percent a year under Republicans, compared with just 2 percent under Democrats.)

More From Quartz

How Mario Draghi bluffed the markets

Steve Jobs wouldn?t have apologized for Apple Maps

Why the US-Chinese row over wind farms is (mostly) a lot of hot air

Yet the industry and its supporters have spent $31.6 million to support Republicans and unseat Democrats in this election cycle, or 89 percent of the $42.6 million spent on all candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based watchdog group. And that is only direct spending on candidates. In addition, the industry and its supporters have poured?$153 million into television ads defending oil, gas and coal, compared with $41 million by clean energy advocates, according a study by The New York Times.

The industry is not only picking on Obama?since 1990, oil and gas companies and their employees have focused some 78 percent of their political contributions on Republican candidates, or $239 million of the $319 million that they spent.

So what explains the industry?s election contribution decisions? In the current election cycle, Republican candidates generally support opening up closed federal land and coastal areas to wide-scale oil and gas drilling; they also by and large support coal mining. Obama and Democrats generally have been big backers of federal support for renewable fuels such as solar and wind, in order to scale back U.S. consumption of fossil fuels.

But that is not everything. There is also ?visceral disdain, beyond dislike? for Obama, John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell USA, told me. ?He?s basically viewed as a know-nothing, empty suit by the industry, using whatever language he needs to so that people think he?s engaged and doing something,? Hofmeister said in an email exchange. ?In meetings with energy executives that I have all the time, it doesn?t take much to get people to a level of angst about Obama that some spit and some just curse.?

With polls showing Obama holding a consistent and growing lead over Republican Mitt Romney, industry leaders are preparing for what comes next, which, if the president does win re-election, apparently will be continued staunch opposition to his energy policies. ?[Oil and gas industry] people will grind their teeth, curse in private and public, say to one another that they?ll have to open their wallets to work against Obama?s efforts, and basically wait him out,? Hofmeister said. ?No one expects him to reach out in victory and offer to work together on the nation?s future energy.?

The industry will take the long view. ?The industry will concentrate on what it does [best]?fight the good fight to resist Obama and his directions,? said Hofmeister, ?and come out the other end in reasonably good shape with momentum on their side because the public will be so upset at the lack of energy leadership that gets us to where we?ll be.?

Greek electricity workers call 48-hour strikes

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's electricity workers said on Friday they will start rolling 48-hour strikes as early as next week to protest austerity measures demanded by the country's international lenders.

Strikes at state-controlled utility PPC have in the past led to rotating power cuts across the country, as the grid operator reduces the load to prevent wider blackouts. PPC is the country's single power retailer and produces about 70 percent of all electricity generated in the country.

The strike will begin as early as October 1 if the government submits new austerity measures to parliament next week, said PPC's labor union GENOP-DEH, one of the most militant unions. If the vote takes place later in the month, the strikes will be postponed accordingly.

The walkout poses yet another challenge to the wage and pension cuts that Athens is negotiating with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to obtain fresh bailout funds.

"These measures ... must not be allowed to go through. GENOP-DEH wants to reverse this policy," the union said.

GENOP also urged labor union confederation GSEE, the country's biggest, to step up its anti-austerity action after a nationwide 24-hour strike on Wednesday. If GSEE agrees to new labor action, GENOP will call off its strike, it said.

Editorial: Apple apologies actually aren't that infrequent, and that's okay

Editorial Apple apologies actually aren't that infrequent, and that's okay

Today, Tim Cook made his first major apology as the CEO of Apple. It probably won't be his last. Despite the obvious knee-jerk reaction regarding the Maps debacle, it's actually interesting that this particular scenario is yet another example of humans having extraordinarily short-term memories. It's the same reason that whatever game we most recently saw is the "best or worst ever." (Packers v. Seahawks 09.24.2012, I'm looking at you.) In truth, Apple has a fairly solid history of ingesting pride in the iPhone era, when it surged headfirst into the realm of serving consumers in a way that it never had before. And moreover, hearing Cook apologize isn't something that should be mocked or berated; one can only hope that more companies of all shapes and sizes develop a policy of listening and reacting. Allow me to explain.

One Direction: Young and living it up

LONDON (AP) ? One Direction's latest single sums it up: "Live While We're Young."

The members of the British pop group say they are happy to have that first track off their second album as a motto ? and admit they're making the most of being young, successful and popular.

"We're working a lot, so when we're not, it's nice to have fun and enjoy yourself," singer Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Wednesday. "It's important."

He was accompanied by band mates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne ? and they're all quick to laugh at themselves and each other.

These five names are known around the globe since their debut album, "Up All Night," became a No. 1 smash worldwide earlier this year.

So who they date and where they go is heavily reported, especially by the British press. But Tomlinson, 20, says they don't mind being trailed by the paparazzi.

"If we go out on a night out and we're a little bit drunk, it's not obviously going to be a great picture, but it's not too bad," he said. "The fact is we're young ? everyone who is our age is going out."

Tomlinson added that "everyone complains about paps (paparazzi), but we always have a laugh with them, to be honest."

They enjoyed shooting the video for the single "Live While We're Young," which is out in the U.K. on Sept. 30.

Fans were quick to chat about the bare-chested scenes that Horan did but he shrugged off the sex idol comments, saying he was just warm, not showing off.

And the band members had a laugh and worked up a sweat trying zorbing ? running around in giant plastic balls like hamsters.

If there's anything controversial about the sound of their feel-good new single, it's that the start of the song is similar to The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go."

"It's a bit like the first single ("What Makes You Beautiful") where the opening riff sounds similar to a certain film ("Summer Nights" from "Grease")," explains Styles. "It's kind of on purpose though, it's a great riff."

Their sophomore album, "Take Me Home," will be released Nov. 12 and 13 in the U.K. and the United States.

Despite joking that they've got rapping and choirs involved this time around, the guys admit that fans can expect more of their same catchy pop style.

"There aren't too many surprises," Styles said. "We're just really happy with how the album's come out. We all agree that it's better than the first one ... we're proud of it."

"In the least arrogant way," Tomlinson made sure to add.

He then pondered why.

"We're a better band. We're closer as friends, we've got better vocally, it's all experience," he said.

Palace to cyberlaw critics: Wait for the IRR

MANILA, Philippines - Malaca?ang appealed to various groups opposing the cybercrime law to wait for the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) but stressed it respects their decision to question it before the Supreme Court.

The Cybercrime Prevention Act, which was published in newspapers last September 18, takes effect 15 days after publication - or on October 9.

?Number one, what is the position of government? The position of government is, look, we already have responsibilities attached to print, TV, and radio, so what the Cybercrime Act does is to also attach responsibilities in cyberspace," Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing on Thursday, September 27.

"You?ve got freedom to report - the freedom of expression is always recognized but freedom of expression is not absolute. We know that for a fact,? Lacierda added.

?And I think, more than anybody else, the journalists are very responsible when it comes to writing articles, they know the parameters. The only concern in cyberspace are the people who are not familiar with being responsible about what they write. And so, if we take away (responsibility), if it?s absolute freedom really?ultimately, you?ll be impinging on other people?s rights,? he said.

Journalists, lawyers and media organizations have said that the law's provisions on libel and state power to shut down websites violate freedom of expression.

President's veto

Asked why the President did not exercise his veto powers on online libel, Lacierda said the recommendation was for approval because before the law was given to him for signing, the Office of the Executive Secretary prepared a legal memorandum for it and it was recommended for signing.

Lacierda said he hopes the IRR would be able to address the concerns of various sectors. "Some people have already resorted to, going to the Supreme Court, that is their right,? Lacierda said.

Among the chief critics of the law is a member of the ruling Liberal Party, Sen Teofisto Guingona III, who filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Thursday asking it to declare some provisions of the law unconstitutional.

Lacierda said this recourse is better than hacking government websites, which happened Wednesday night, September 26 and attacked the sites of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the water administration system, among others.

Lacierda said the new law was discussed during a social summit last weekend sponsored by Rappler, Tweetup Manila and several organizations but ?as in any other law, there are venues if somebody would wish to contest the provisions.?

?However, as it stands right now the law is there, IRR is being drafted, maybe we can talk to those who will draft the IRR. Of course, we also know that the IRR should not be greater than the law itself. The water cannot rise above the source,? Lacierda said.

Be responsible

?If you want to express yourself, we can express ourselves in a decent manner. If you want to criticize, you can criticize without getting to licentious. Those are really just the concerns. There should be responsibilities. Freedom is there, we recognize the freedom to express oneself. But, we should be reminded that the responsibilities which are present already in media, in radio, in TV, should also be present in cyberspace. There should be no fear of expressing oneself, I think, that?s the most important thing,? Lacierda said.

Asked about apprehensions that the government might use this law to go after critics, Lacierda said: ?You don?t have to have cyberspace to do that. We?ve seen that?We have the freedoms expressed in media so, these are not different. If I?m not mistaken, the definition of libel in the Cybercrime Act was lifted from the Revised Penal Code. So, the definition did not change,? Lacierda said.

?The wisdom has been expressed through the Cybercrime Act. These legislators agreed that that particular provision should be included. The position of the President (Aquino) is that there should also be responsibility in cyberspace. Now, as to (amendments)? lawmaking is not our department so, we assume that once it leaves the hands of the legislature, there?s presumption of regularity,? Lacierda said. - Rappler.com

"Big Brother" fan-favorite backed by Legendary father, Sid

Throughout the summer, WWE Legend Sid faithfully tuned in week after week to ?Big Brother 14? on CBS. Is the two-time WWE Champion a die-hard fan of the hit reality series with a cult-like following? Well, not exactly. He was watching to see his son, Frank Eudy, compete for $500,000.

Frank, 28, learned after the ?Big Brother 14? finale that his proud papa was watching and cheering him on up until his eviction on day 62 of the game, which pits a group of competitors (or Houseguests) in a camera-filled house to plot against each other for three months.

?Honestly, I knew my dad was always going to root for me no matter what it is I?m doing,? Frank explained to WWE.com.??He?s always going to support me, even though we might not talk as much as we used to. I know it?s not exactly his type of show, I was a little surprised to find out he got into as much as he did.?

While Frank didn?t win the $500,000 prize, he won $25,000 in ?America?s Vote? when he was chosen by the viewers as their favorite Houseguest.

?I?m a big fan of the show, so knowing that the fans voted me America?s favorite Houseguest is almost as good as winning the whole game to me,? he said.

A fierce mental and physical player, Frank won many competitions on ?Big Brother 14,? and the other Houseguests often tried to evict him from the game. During a vignette on the CBS show, Sid said his son was targeted because ?he?s one of the best.? (WATCH) Frank was elated to find out his dad was his biggest cheerleader (he?s been seen donning a T-shirt emblazoned with Frank?s trademark wild hairdo) and is certain Sid is proud of his intensity and sometimes vocal play in the game.

?Knowing my dad, he has trouble keeping his cool, and I try to keep my cool as much as possible. I?m sure he was out there rooting for me when I was giving those big yelling matches with those people like I would sometimes,? he said with a laugh.

While Frank hasn?t spoken to his father since the show?s finale last week, he plans to see Sid and the rest of his family and friends soon. Frank credits much of his incredible game play to them.

?I am who I am because of my parents. I owe pretty much all of it to them, and I was really close with my nana and have been for these last couple of years,? he said. ?They have shaped and molded me to the person I am today. I absolutely have them to thank for being the player I was in the game.?

Growing up the son of a WWE Legend has given Frank many fond memories of watching his dad?s career and meeting some of his own heroes.

?I remember one time I met Robocop, when he was doing a guest spot on one of the shows. That was pretty neat for me because I was a big Robocop fan,? Frank enthusiastically recalled about WCW Capital Combat 1990.

?I loved those days back when Sting was in the bright-colored makeup and he and Dad used to battle it out on a nightly basis. I used to be able to go on the road with Dad sometimes and watch some of those matches. Oh man, there?s just so many times!? he said.

?I remember there was that time him and Hulk Hogan, they were tag team partners for a little bit and then they turned on each other. I remember it was just a one-time thing, but I remember that specifically, too. There have been a lot of good memories. He put on a bunch of good shows,? Frank recalled.

?I remember he came back with The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, and he was his bodyguard there for a while. That was a great little stint, too!?

While he may have grown up watching his father get in the ring, Frank hasn?t felt the calling to become a Superstar like so many children of WWE Legends do.

?I don?t think I ever wanted anything like that for me, especially because I?m not as big as Dad is,? he said with a laugh. ?I?m one of those body types that would have to be doing flips off the top rope. I just don?t think I?m suited for that.?

Frank is enjoying time to decompress since getting out of the ?Big Brother 14? house, hanging out with fellow Houseguest and mentor, Mike ?Boogie,? in Las Vegas. After his upcoming trip to visit his family in Memphis, Tenn., the road is wide open for the ?Big Brother? fan-favorite.

?I?m pretty realistic in the sense that it?s very possible I?ll just be some reality TV jabroni that everybody will forget about in a week or two ? and if that?s the case, that?s the case. I still got to live my dream of making it on that show. I tried hard for three years to do it, and I got the full experience and had a blast doing it. I?d absolutely be open to whatever opportunities might come my way, though.?

The Father of Stop-Motion Animation Shows Off His Pre-CG Movie Monsters [Video]

Jurassic Park was one of the last nails in the coffin for stop-motion animation—a special effects technique that had brought dinosaurs to the silver screen almost 50 years ago. But before the advent of computer graphics it was considered the cutting edge of visual effects, thanks to the work of a man named Ray Harryhausen who was a master at the technique. More »

Gov. Christie defends proposed NJ tax cut plan

LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday offered his most vigorous defense yet of a plan to trim taxes by 10 percent, saying tax relief has become "even more urgent" because of recent bad economic reports.

Christie's proposal to phase in a modest residential tax cut over three years beginning in January has been at the center of a partisan storm over the state's economic trend.

Democrats agreed to fund the first phase of the cut ? $183 million ? but Christie said they are holding the money political hostage by refusing to release it unless revenue collections meet his optimistic projection of 7.2 percent. Democrats say it would be irresponsible to cut taxes if the state can't afford to do so. Christie vetoed the Democrats' plan for middle-class tax relief in June because it relied on additional tax revenue from the wealthiest 16,000 filers.

"If we want to get the economy moving in New Jersey, we've got to be more competitive with our neighboring states, and we have the highest tax rates in the region," Christie said when asked Monday about the state's finances after an elementary school groundbreaking in Long Branch. "The reason the tax cut is even more urgent now is to try to make us more competitive with these other states."

Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Bergen County Democrat who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, said Democrats persuaded Christie to support a property tax reduction rather than a personal income tax cut, which would disproportionately benefit the wealthy. But, Sarlo said, Democrats have since adopted a wait-and-see approach because of disappointing revenue collections.

Christie has been calling out Democrats for reneging on the deal after he agreed to go along with Senate President Steve Sweeney's proposal for property tax relief. On Monday, the governor upped the ante: If Democrats don't think the state can afford a tax cut, they should propose a corresponding amount in budget cuts to fund the tax break.

Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, a Democrat who chairs the chamber's budget committee, convened a hearing last week to get a handle on how the state finished the 2012 fiscal year on June 30 and how well it's done in the first two months of the new fiscal year. Christie didn't send the state treasurer to testify and on Monday dismissed the effort as a political circus. But Prieto, of Hudson County, said the session shed light on the state's ongoing and significant fiscal problems.

"We all want a tax cut and a successful state, but it must be a responsible tax cut, and we face major fiscal problems unresolved by this administration," Prieto said.

A report released by the treasury showed tax collections are $100 million below projections for the first two months of the fiscal year. The Legislature's budget expert estimates that the state finished 2012 with about $240 million less than projected. The state's unemployment rate hit 9.9 percent in August, well above the national average of 8.1 percent.

Standard & Poor's lowered New Jersey's credit outlook to negative from stable. Two other ratings houses sounded similar warnings about the state's structural budget deficit and ballooning pension fund obligation but retained a stable outlook for the state.

On Monday, Christie railed against what he termed Democrats' obsession with revenue numbers and defended his conditional veto of a bill that would have required prompt monthly reporting of state finances, even though it mirrored an executive order he signed in 2010 requiring the treasury to publish monthly revenue reports.

"When they play political games, that's what they're going to get in return," Christie said of the Democrats. "They know full well revenue numbers aren't final until they're audited."

In the veto message released Friday, Christie proposed including a provision to issue a $10,000 fine to anyone who leaks budget data.

Though the governor's suggestion appeared to be a slap at the Office of Legislative Services, which provides budget information to the Legislature, and lawmakers who provide it to the media, Christie insisted that wasn't so.

"That stuff is not supposed to be disseminated publicly until it's authorized to be disseminated publicly," he said, "and it can have a negative effect on the markets."

What Can You Afford: Benefit Versus Cost | Small Business Trends

Every camera is not equal. Neither is every computer, cell phone, printer, email marketing software or administrative assistant. And it would be easy to assume that a higher price tag means better quality (I had a sales person feed me that line recently). But experience teaches you to dig a little deeper.

photography shot

It?s not that you?re trying to be cheap. It?s just that the small business reality, especially in this economy, boils down to a few questions:

  1. Can you afford it?
  2. Can you afford to live without it?
  3. And if you cannot afford to live without, is this particular product or service your best way to get the benefit you want?

It?s not about having the latest and coolest BlackBerry, Android or iPhone, it?s about effectively and quickly communicating with your team in and out of the office. Bottom line behavior means labels come second to outcome.

In the small business setting, there is no room for fluff. Every purchase must deliver on core needs or it?s a waste and a shame.

What if you decide to add video marketing to your communication strategy? As you prepare to launch or update your YouTube page, you may discover a need (or desire) for a better camera and sound equipment.

Before the wallet hits the counter, you have to ask yourself, ?What do we really need?? Is the bargain basement version of the product or service enough, or is it too simplistic? Is the high-end, high-dollar option too much or just right?

Chances are:

  1. you aren?t filming for prime time television,
  2. you aren?t creating images for a full feature spread in National Geographic, and
  3. you aren?t recording for a nationally syndicated radio station.

Meaning you don?t need a two thousand dollar camera and four digit sound equipment. You probably need a product somewhere in the middle.

The same is true for most small business purchases. Do the research, because you can?t afford to pay for features that you?ll never use.

Wealth gap widens as labor's share of income falls

By Reuters

Labor income has dropped as a share of total income earned in the United States, widening the gap between rich and poor, according to a study by the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank.

Citing data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, one of three data sources used in the report, the Cleveland Fed said labor's share of gross national income had declined to 63.8 percent now after fluctuating around 67 percent during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.

That has resulted in a spike in income inequality, the dispersion of annual incomes across households. Inequality had been declining up to the late 1970s.

"Since labor income is more evenly distributed across U.S. households than capital income, the decline made total income less evenly distributed and more concentrated at the top of the distribution, and this contributed to increase income inequality," it said.

According to the Cleveland Fed, between 1967 and 1980, the average real income of the bottom 20 percent of households grew by 1.34 percent, faster than the 1.09 percent growth rate of the top 20 percent and the 0.67 percent of the top 5 percent.

After that period, however, average real income grew by only 0.05 percent for the bottom 20 percent of households while it grew by 1.24 percent for the top 20 percent and by 1.67 percent for the top 5 percent.

The Cleveland Fed blamed the trend on changes in the technology used to produce goods and services, globalization, trade openness, and developments in labor markets and policies.

The Cleveland Fed said it expected labor's share of income to regain ground as the economic recovery continues, adding: "Income inequality will not necessarily decrease, though."

The wealth gap could still widen, it said, because inequality is also affected by the way income is concentrated, or distributed across the households, and because capital income is strongly correlated to business cycles and tends to rise during recoveries

"This suggests that capital income will become more concentrated at the top in the coming years of the recovery, helping to raise income inequality even further. This effect has dominated the dynamics of income inequality during the past two business cycles," the Cleveland Fed said.

CHICAGOIn today's fast-paced society, consumers often reach for nutrition bars when looking for a healthy on-the-go snack. A new study in the September issue of the Journal of Food Science published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) found that partially replacing canola oil with fish oil in nutrition bars can provide the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids without affecting the taste.

Producers have been hesitant to incorporate fish oil into foods because it tends to give off a fishy taste or smell, therefore requiring additional processing steps to eliminate these unwanted qualities. In the study, four levels of fish oil were evaluated to determine consumer acceptance of fish-oil fortified nutrition bars. The results showed that oat and soy-based nutrition bars fortified with the lowest replacement level (20 percent) of fish oil did not affect consumer acceptance or purchase intent.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are known to lower triglyceride levels and may help with rheumatoid arthritis.

Dynamo Health 101: Blood Cancer Awareness Month?.. | Dynamo ...

I was recently watching Good Morning America regarding Robin Robert?s fight against Myelodysplastic Syndrome and was inspired to write a post on blood cancer. Her resilience is infectious and I encourage everyone to support her fight. Team Robin!!!!!

Despite advances in technology, radiation and chemotherapeutic agents; the incidence of cancer steadily increases which theoretically may be a reflection of better detection. Never the less, many people still wonder when the road to a cure will be discovered. ?Cancer awareness is a public health initiative to provide information on cancer related facts in an effort to educate the public, support ongoing research and empower current cancer survivors and caretakers. With September being Blood Cancer Awareness Month, this article strives to answer the following questions:

  • What is blood cancer?
  • What is the epidemiology of blood cancer?
  • What are the risk factors and clinical signs and symptoms?
  • What is the role of radiation, chemotherapeutic agents and stem cell transplantation?
  • How can we make a difference?

What is blood cancer?

Blood cancer is a form of cancer that attacks the production and function of your blood cells, bone marrow and lymphatic system; a system that aids the immune system in eradicating waste products, bacteria, toxins and cancer cells. Blood cancers are comprised of the following: leukemia, lymphoma (Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin), myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes. These diseases typically arise from acquisition of a single abnormal cell that multiplies and interferes with the production of functional blood and immune cells.

What is the epidemiology of blood cancer?

In the United States, one person is diagnosed with blood cancer approximately every 4 minutes. If you extrapolate that data out for a total of 7 days, that is approximately 2,520 people; the equivalent to the entire undergraduate population of Smith College having this diagnosis. The incidence rate is lower than that of diabetes (one person every 30 seconds), but higher than HIV (one person every 9.5 minutes). According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated combined total of 1,638,910 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia (47,150), lymphoma (79,190) or myeloma (21,700) in 2012. Based on these statistics, my guess is that everyone might agree that this is quite alarming.

Blood cancers represent the most common types of cancer in children and adolescents. Leukemia represents the highest incidence at 27.5%, followed by Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma at 7.1% and 6.5% respectively. Males seem to be disproportionately more at risk of developing and dying from leukemia than females. Although blood cancers are relatively rare in comparison to other forms of cancer, African Americans are disproportionately at higher risk for more aggressive forms of blood cancers (i.e. multiple myeloma) and typically have poorer survival rates when compared to other racial and ethnic groups.? However, clinical outcomes relative to survival rates have improved over the years and can be best illustrated in figure below.

What are the risk factors and clinical signs and symptoms?

The truth is nobody knows exactly what causes the development of blood cancers, but there are certain risk factors that place you at a higher likelihood of developing them. Blood cancer risk factors include the following: increased age, exposure to chemotherapy and ionizing radiation, smoking and tobacco use, obesity and exposure to chemicals (i.e. benzene).? ?Chemotherapy and ionizing radiation not only destroy abnormal cells but can actually also injure normal host cells. As a result, these nonfunctional injured cells proliferate and become the primary cells in your bone marrow; thus causing blood cancers. Early detection of blood cancers is extremely difficult as the symptoms can mimic less severe conditions like common cold. The clinical signs and symptoms are malaise, swollen lymph nodes, itching, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fever, bruising easily, fatigue, headaches, frequent infections and generalized weakness. Patients are diagnosed through a series of blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy.

What is the role of radiation, chemotherapeutic agents and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)?

The goals of treatment are to relieve symptoms, minimize the risk of serious toxicities and ultimately eradicate the abnormal cells and produce new functional cells. Treatment decisions are based on the type of blood cancer, the age of the patient and their general overall well-being. Undergoing chemotherapy and radiation causes a lot of stress on the human body, therefore patients should be in good health otherwise to successful complete it. Chemotherapeutic agents are utilized in order to destroy the abnormal cells; patients typically receive them in different stages (i.e. induction, consolidation and maintenance stages).

Under appropriate conditions, stem cell transplantation may also be useful in treating certain types of blood cancers. Stem cell transplantation is the process of transplanting stem cells derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood or an umbilical cord. An autologous HSCT is when cells are taken out of the patient, harvested and then returned to their body. Allogeneic HSCT is when cells are taken out of a donor (i.e. a relative or non-relative), harvested and then inserted into the patient. The patient must undergo high doses of chemotherapy (with or without radiation) to eradicate the malignant cells from the body prior to HSCT. Patients are at risk of developing a syndrome called graft versus host disease, if the patient?s residual cells attack the new cells.

How can we make a difference?

Many of us may feel that we lack the capacity to make a difference in the fight against cancer. But, I am here to tell you that ?you can? and here?s how:

1. Be a resource of information for your friends and family. ?There are many misconceptions about medical conditions that exist in today?s society leading to the spread of inaccurate information. Knowing the facts are key. For example, some people believe all cancers form tumors. This is false. Leukemia as we read above does not form tumors but arises from abnormal blood cells that affect the functionality of the immune system. A second misconception is ?people should not bank stem cells from placenta or cord blood if blood cancers don?t exist in their family?. ?This is also false. People chose to bank their child(ren)?s stem cells as a safeguard for the future. There is not always a genetic link for the development of cancer. Additionally, stem cells may have a role in other conditions such as Alzheimer?s, diabetes and heart disease. I encourage everyone to visit the following website for more information and to spread the WORD about blood cancers.

2. Seek medical attention and trust your body. For many cancers, there are warning signs that individuals tend to ignore. If something is abnormal for 2 weeks or longer, please seek assistance.

3. Stop smoking. Smoking is a risk factor for nearly all cancers and other medical conditions (i.e. heart disease, diabetes?..shall I continue).

4. Become a bone marrow donor. Due to lack of donors in ethnic communities, treatment modalities are limited; thus making the disease harder to eradicate in our communities. Consider donating today.

5. Donate your time and money to the cause if you can. In these hard economic times, I know everyone is holding on to every piece of pocket change. But if you can donate, please do. There are other ways to contribute monetarily including hosting bake sales, skipping those mid-afternoon coffee breaks. Every cent counts on the road to a cure. It is important to donate to charities recognized by the IRS, if not the money you contribute may go to marketing as opposed to research.? Lastly, participate in blood cancer awareness events in your city.

Lastly, I encourage everyone to get out there and SPREAD AWARENESS!!!! Just like Lottery, you never know!!

Dr. Bias

Windows Phone 8 features new Start Screen animation

Reader tboy2000 has noticed another minor change in Windows Phone 8.

As can be seen in that 11 minute video we posted earlier, the start screen features a new animation, which also includes the app list, unlike the current Windows Phone 7 one, which does not.

The change is likely due to the ?missing? arrow, with the new animation doing the part of hinting that there is in fact more apps available that just those just found on the start screen.

See the animation from the 10:50 mark in the video after the break.

Thanks tboy2000 for the tip.

Early letters show controlling behavior of Nazi Goebbels

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? The love letters, school papers and dramatic works of college-age Joseph Goebbels reveal a romantic young man beginning to show signs of anti-Semitism and egotistical and controlling behavior, according to a Connecticut auction house selling the pre-war writings of Adolf Hitler's propaganda chief.

Alexander Historical Auctions plans to sell the collection on Sept. 27 in Stamford, saying it may prove invaluable in providing historical and psychological insights.

"It sums up the formative years of the number two man in the Third Reich, who was responsible for motivating the masses in Germany to back Hitler," said Bill Panagopulos, the company's president. "In my opinion, it shows how this rather simple, shy and love-struck college student really just became radicalized."

The thousands of pages include Goebbels' college dissertation, report cards, dozens of poems, school essays and letters from relatives, friends and girlfriends.

"You really get a feel for what's going on in his head," Panagopulos said. "There's a lot of information if somebody wants to dig into the mind of this man who grew into a lunatic."

In an early sign of his ego, Goebbels would sign some of his materials with numerous signatures. Toward the later years of the collection, Goebbels is starting to show anti-Semitic tendencies, Panagopulos said. He added that the auction house has only translated about 10 percent of the papers and has had a tough time with Goebbels' handwriting.

The sale sparked concerns by a leader of a Holocaust survivors group who criticized the auction house's sale last year of the journals written by Nazi death camp doctor Josef Mengele.

"Alexander Auction House is making a business out of selling Nazi artifacts and memorabilia," said Menachem Rosensaft, vice president of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants. "They clearly have the legal right to profit here from such materials. I leave it to others to determine the morality of it all."

Rosensaft said such materials belong in an archive for historians to study. He expressed concerns that at an auction, the materials could wind up in the wrong hands and be used as a shrine to the Nazi leader.

Panagopulos said museums often depend on donations made by people buying items at auction. He said neo-Nazis don't collect the material.

Addressing another concern of Rosensaft's, that there is a cottage industry of creating fake Nazi memorabilia, Panagopulos said most of the Goebbels documents up for sale have been available to experts, scholars and researchers for years and no one has questioned their authenticity. He called their provenance "ironclad."

He said his own morals should not be questioned, noting that his father's hometown in Greece was largely wiped out in an act of German retribution.

The collection, which spans the period from Goebbels' childhood to shortly before he joined the Nazi party in 1924, is expected to sell for more than $200,000, Panagopulos said. It includes more than 100 letters written between Goebbels and Anka Stalherm, the first great love of his life, and show his desire to control others, he said. Letters from other girlfriends include a pair of sisters he seduced at the same time.

In a letter to his teacher after his sister died, he thanks his teacher for condolences but adds that his loss is minor compared to losses suffered by "our fatherland."

Goebbels and his wife killed their six children with cyanide before killing themselves the day after Hitler's suicide.

Panagopulos said the sale is on behalf of a Swiss company and would not benefit any relatives of Goebbels, but he said his auction house does not identify consignors. He said the company received the materials from a man who obtained them from an earlier owner who won the rights to the writings in a 1950s court case with Goebbels' sister.

The auction house last year said it sold the journals written by Mengele, drawing criticism from Rosensaft who said the business was profiting off the sale of materials by one of the worst mass murderers in history. Alexander officials said the Jewish buyer wanted to remain anonymous and is building a collection for a museum.

Panagopulos said at the time his profit would be $15,000 to $20,000 and that he would make a donation to a war memorial. He said Mengele's journals have historical value and that many auction houses deal with Nazi-related items and the buyers are reputable.
